My Mom's highschool friend rented a plantation style home in west virginia...she had 5 kids and it was a 5 bedroom....the hallways were prolly 15 feet wide and T shaped off the front door...I think the kitchen was 30' square and lined with cabinets...huge dining room, a formal livingroom and a family room...it only had one bathroom...it was on the second floor...the attic was wide open...and had to be over 2500 sq ft...like I said, this place was huge...and had a 12' wide porch on 3 sides...they moved after the first winter...heating bills were near 500 a month...in the early 80's

This is exactly why I gave Lisa the advice I did. I have been there and done that with an old house. Thank God I was just renting it. It was in Buffalo, late 70's, huge stone mansion on 5 acres. My first gas bill in January was nearly 600 bucks. I went up in the attic and there was no insulation at all. I did the attic and knocked it down a couple of hundred. But I got out before the next winter, in fact that is when I moved to Baton Rouge.

what lottery is that?
Must be the Mega Millions

Well that'd do it! There are some real common sense things you can do to make an old house more efficient in the wintertime.

I had a 1930's house in Denver and my winter heating bills were really low. Had I more time there I would have insulated that house to the hilt.

Im with ya on that one.

We actually found a company to do an energy efficiency test on our home, and he did this one suction test, showed us every little air leak in the house, and we were able to cut our heating bill down quite abit by just following their advice.

We put new siding on about 3 days before the guy came out, and he told us there was a government grant available that would have paid for new siding (this particular kind i think) and to put styrofoam sheets underneath. D'oh!

I love insulation. I just ain't gonna put it in a house that I don't own. I have built a lot of houses in Alaska with 12" walls. My own dream house, 3500 square feet of ranch house, with even the garage heated, my worse gas bill all the years I lived in it was 192 bucks, and that was just outside Buffalo. In the '90's.

If we buy an older house we'll definitely have that draft test done. Ive heard about it before.

And D'Oh on the grant!

Its not cheap, but it works. See Mark even if we do buy a cool old house, if we put some time and effort into taking care of various leaks, and insulating the crap out of it, it'll be pretty efficient.

Besides, if I realize the goal of installing a corn furnace, and growing my own corn, utilities will be FREE.

Well I had a whole list of posts to reply too and my d@mn computer locked up, and I dont think I wanna go back through the eleven(40 post) pages to make the reply's.

Man, I go out parting one night and get all hammered and I return to all of this commotion...WOW. I'm not a supporter but visit this place often(daily) and I would like to see it stay here in this forum,or at the least a link to it.

The one post I do remember wanting to reply to was Tristans picture of the girl in the bikini. I see nothing wrong with the picture what so ever....other than I'm not in it!
