well i finally got to get the truck out a couple times to some local mudbogs...it runs decent, but the 37" militarys are living up to their bad rep...plus im under geared with 3:54's so wheelspin is an issue....better gears and some form of swampers are definitely needed to seriously compete in mud bogs....i had a blast even if i didnt get halfway through the pit, so i wont call it a failure, instead the truck showed me it can still run after all these years of sitting, it just needs better shoes!! im ready to hit some trails and see how it does then..the bogs that we went to were made for much larger trucks, the property owner has a 76 F-150 on roks with a BBF and 44" hawgs, and his truck is small compared to the guys on 54" boggers and others with huge ags ....when the last event started, only the first guy out of 15 made it through in the 36" and under class, i was first in line in the 37"-40" class, so i hit the same wall all the smaller guys made and i couldnt break through...my brother on the other hand didnt have much problem with his 500HP samurai, his second run got him 1st place in our class...he runs a chebby powered zuk on 38.5" boggers...here are a couple vids even though mine are pretty lame...i know i know, he isnt driving a Ford, but im proud of him anyways for kicking azz in a homebuilt rig, that little zuk will surprise ya....

That 465 4 speed has a big difference from 2nd to 3rd, and he starts off in 3rd. Combine that with the 3.73 Lincoln locked gears and 38" boggers, so 3rd is just too high for deep mud. Next he is stepping up to 4.10s or 4.55s to fix that very problem. Plus the hole he was in when he downshifted had trucks on 44s getting stuck in it. I wish I had more vids of other trucks at that bog, there weren't many trucks with smaller than 44s making full runs. He has only been in 5 or 6 competitions with this setup, so we are working out the bugs and dialing it in right. We live by the city so test and tunes before actual events aren't optional. Finding a place to wheel has gotten so bad he is thinking about yanking the 383 out of it and putting it in some sort of street rod.
I'm thinkin if he can start out in 3rd, 500 hp would be enough to keep it there......
Just sayin....
I hear what your saying, but when your under geared your SOL. If HP and torque was all it took, then high HP dragsters would just race in high gear. It's all about the magic combo for your drivetrain and the stuff you put it through. Surely somebody else can agree with that??
I can agree with that. I've been talking with the huge hp rail car guys that I race with about what it takes to get them on top of the mud. Besides light weight and at least 700hp, most run powerglides with chain drives and 6.xxish rear gears. Seems if you can keep your driveline ratios (tranny gear + rear end gear + t-case gear) somewhere around 10.0 then you've got it made. I've also heard that the magic wheelspeed number is around 120mph. Just something to think about...
I call B S this is a ford site and some crappy little wanna be jeep needs to be on one of those real 4x4 sites it doesn't even have any ford parts so you know it doesn't belong what's next a Toyota or a Nissan it's turning Asian around here that's not right if theres gonna be a site for Found On Road Dead trucks then so be it It's not there fault ford made what they made and is jealous of the rest so they didn't make a Sami neither did Nash .So what does it matter letm burn baby let them BURN cause they will lol
