So I finally woke up about an hour ago (taking a 3 day this weekend). I probably would have slept more, but my dogs needed to be fed and let out.
I'll definately be excited once she fires up, that's for sure. It was strange last night though, I was just out there in the garage, working away, and never really felt tired. Finally looked at the clock and figured I'd better try and get at least some sleep.
Once she's fired, who knows how many miles I'll be driving. Part of it will depend on where I'm going. I've got to break in this engine, so for at least the first 1000 miles, I won't be doing any short around town trips at all. Gonna have to limit it to some highway trips and such. Plus, with fuel costing what it does, that will probably limit me too. I've been driving around a little car for the past few months and am used to only spending $35 to get me 200 miles.
I am in the same boat with the cost to fill a small car being much less than filling the truck. If you need a day trip, farmb0y and I are just a 4-5 hour drive up 63. The wife would have a good meal ready if we knew you were coming. Think about it.
(Do you catch a little selfish desire to see and hear the truck in what I just said?)
Mark, yeak I caught your selfishness there. LOL. I actually may consider that. I need to get through that 1000 mile mark before I head for vacation in 4 weeks, since I'll be towing a trailer and want to make sure there are no glitches with the truck. No guarantees though. I'll still have to get back home to see my parents and down to Lead Hill for the torque converter upgrade sometime before then too.
Edit: that trip up 63 would definately vary the speed a lot though, with all the small towns I have to go through to get there. That's acutally up near where I picked up this engine, in Mitchelville.
Hey JT, just read most of the replies in this thread. Very impressed. Couple questions, are you working off a budget goal or are you just pouring the dollars on it? Reason I ask is, i'd be tempted to copy this if within a certain budget.
I'm not really working on a budget, per say. I know there's certian things I want to do, but can't afford just yet (dual CP3's & twin turbos). I was trying to stay under $10K, and I think it could easily be done for that if you didn't mod it as much as I am. The injectors and turbo were the biggest extra expenses I hadn't initially planned on. But, I just decided I wanted a truck that I'm satisfied with and not wanting more from. I pretty much wanted to put this engine in and be done modding it for a couple of years, so I spent a little extra now. I'm over $10K, but under $15K. Probably somewhere around $12-$14.
The engine is considered a 3rd generation. It's is an early '04 engine, that was a California rated engine, so stock it has a measly 235 HP. It's from the same family as the 305 HP engine though...only differences between them is in the engine programming from the factory.
However, it should be at 575-600 RWHP with what I've done to it. Consider a 20% drivetrain loss and that's around 700 HP at the crank. Only about triple the stock output.
Jeremy, I guess that I hadn't heard what town you went to to get the engine. Mitchellville is a little east of Des Moines just off 80. (Don't tell farmb0y that. He wants to destroke quite badly and that is way too close to home.) We are just about due north of Kirksville. Where 63 goes west from Ottumwa, then north and back east, we head north on 21. Saves a lot of back tracking and traffic. On 21 you would go through a quaint town called What Cheer. They have one heck of a flea market every year but I don't know when it is if you are in to that.
I know that it would be a long day trip but keep it in mind.

Well, I got it from an individual that happens to live there, so it's not someplace that has them readily available. I don't think he'd have much luck running by this guy's house to get an engine.
That sucker is looking good man. Might also want to look into some marine grade hose but IDK what your alignment requirement is. I know that stuff is stiff and tough, you aren't going to do a lot of manipulating with it.
Now it is the nickel and dime petty stuff to sort out. You'll get it. So it will be running this weekend right? C'mon man, right?
