Cummins Conversion Update
Thanks for all the comments guys!
No updates today, but I am definately starting to get excited about my truck again. Looking back, I feel like I made quite a bit of progress this past week. A couple more like that, and it should be running.
Austin, that's an F1 Helix 2 cam, that I happened to get from Source Automotive, which is just one of F1's vendors. At the time I bought it, I think it was the last Helix 2 cam in the country, and nobody seemed to know for sure when they would be off backorder and available again. Much to my dismay, about 2-3 weeks later (and with my cam still sitting in the box) a new shipment of cam's comes in, but at a price that's a couple hundred dollars cheaper than what I paid. Oh well. I played it safe by buying what was available at the time.

Dan, how cool would it be, to complete your truck with a Common Rail conversion. Your truck has so much show, but no go, and if you put a bombed twin-everything CR in there chugging out about 800hp, it would surely be the nicest truck in the nation.
I've been thinking about it Kris.
Originally, I was thinking about buying another vehicle.....determined that would be dumb since I wouldn't have time to drive it and don't drive my 01 much.
Then, I started thinking about maybe doing a turbo and a few other things.....but the more I think about it, it may be best just to save up for a CR swap

[QUOTE=jtharvey;6366492] I decided to try a trick to get the new gear on that was passed onto me from an old hot rodder friend of mine. I put the cam in a chest freezer for a couple days and then this afternoon, stuck the gear in an oven at 450* for about 3 hours. The cam shrunk from the cold and the gear expanded from the heat so that the gear just dropped right onto the cam, without having the stress of using pressure to press it on. I honestly wasn't sure if it would work, but it did. [QUOTE=jtharvey;6366492]
Thats the same thing I had to do with my race car axle to put a new axle tube in the side bell housing. . . it smelled like burned gear oil in my house for three days. Good thing there is no Ol lady living here

speaking of destroking.... I went over to a buddy of mines today and personally saw an '03 PSD w/ the "sick-0" out and a 24V CTD in. it was pretty sweet! My buddy claims that he's one of the 1st in the country to make the swap from a 6.0 to the 5.9. He's been working with a company out West that has actually been calling HIM to ask how he did this or that. There were no pre-manufactured motor mounts or anything else available for the 6.0 swap. Apparently there is quite a few pre made parts available to swap a 7.3 out, but not the 6.0. And to top it off they also went from an auto. trans behind the 6.0 to a 6 spd. manual behind the CTD, so they had to put in the shifter, clutch pedal, linkage and all that stuff as well, WOW, what an undertaking! Sure was sweet chickin' this rig out and seeing how they got around different problems, like where the exhaust man. dumped out, the engine fan, the intake, etc. etc. It was just cool, the first time I've ever had the chance to actually see a CTD in a Ford pickup!
Hey Broken Bit, That's a pretty sweet avatar pic ya got there...
Also, as far as the 6.0 swap out, no he's not the first. Over on Powerstroke Nation, i know of at least two people off the top of my head who's done it. Squatch and Unbroken are the two, although i KNOW there are more. Like the big white 550 in Diesel Power a long time ago.

Oh, OK Kris. I didn't know, that's just what he said, I guess due to the fact that the company that actually makes custom parts for the swap had nothing for the 6.0 swap, and they were the ones calling him and asking how to do some of the differant things. Maybee I should get him in touch with some of the other guys that have done it and they could swap stories! lol. Thanks for the compliments on the avatar! That's standin' in front of my "cow truck" it's an "01 FLD 112 Freightshaker.

Technically Rich's truck (UNBROKEN) hasn't been fired up yet.....per my conversation with him earlier.
that really sucks about the price on the cam thing jeremy, but atleast you got what you wanted. there is a shop down here that is making cams, and complete upper valvetrain assemblies for the cummins motors.
anyways off topic alittle, but i finally was able to put that van turbo in this weekend. it went in without a hitch, and we didnt even have any trouble with the up pipe clamp, or down pipe clamp.
progress looks good jeremy, cant wait to see and hear it runnin.

Yep.
Hoping to be able to check it out in person in a month or so at Scheid's.......be a change to not see him in his work truck anymore.

Glad you got the turbo on ok. You've made it farther with my old parts than Jason has.
(We need a "poke" smiley)No progress this evening. I planned on headstuds tonight, but had to take care of a customer earlier this evening, that wasn't planned, and by the time I got home I didn't feel like diving into the headstud project. If I don't run into something else tomorrow evening, I hope to get them done.
