Large, heavy internals
Balanced nature of Inline design
Low (Rel.) compression
Not pushed to limits

All reasons this engine is so long-lived. New engines have/will have problems hitting 200,000 because they're built to run at their limits. If you were forced to operate at your maximum potential every day of you're life, how long would you last? That's what its like in the new engines. They're pushed hard to perform. The 300-6 is lazy. It doesn't like to move fast, but it is buff as hell and has the power where you need it (Sounds kinda like me O_o). It doesn't have to work hard to drop fat torque...which is why it is so long lasting. And Ford was smart and has only put good transmissions behind it. M5OD is good if you replace the drain plugs, ZF enough said, C6 who can argue its weak?, and the E4OD - its strong but you can't expect all overdrive transmissions to be able to last as long as the engine anyways - its unrealistic. Ford rear-ends don't grenade. All this just adds up nicely to explain why not only do Ford trucks run forever...but why the Inline 6 does.

Oh..forgot the NP tranny - try breaking it too...

Only way I can think of killing a six without physically taking a sledge to it (and even then...) is to routinely rev it up over 5 grand. I have a feelign getting that high the engine will start to have trouble.

Btw..220,000+

207,149 miles . I put it in for a rebuild after that. It's in my 84 F-150 and the valve train is not adjustable... And was making quite a bit of noise. It was also leaking oil externally, so the rebuild was in order.

I'd bought it at 194,000 miles, and hoped to get another 200,000 out of it after the rebuild, but now the tranny is slipping (3 speed auto) .

I've been reading the term "granny tranny" in these forums, but I don't know what it means. Can someone please explain? I did a search, but didn't find anything to help. If I have to replace the unit; all the miles I drive would dictate something with overdrive to help boost gas mileage .

They usually refer to the low first gear the T-18 has, "Granny Gear", or granny tranny

a granny gear is a really low (numericly high) first gear. you usually dont use it unless you are pulling a load. you winde the engine out at like 10 mph. a granny tranny would be a transmission that has a granny first gear.

Wink low miles

My truck is a 92 f150 custom (the only one I have seen). It had 29,000 miles when I got it a year ago. It now has just over 35,975 now. I got it from my grandma and all it needed was a new paint job, a cd player, and speakers.

My 1987 F150 has 6,000Miles(6 thousand).Ok ok,so the truck has 274K but it got a brand new crate engine 6K ago.Just bought it for $2200.There is a woman that I used to work with(2 month ago) that has a F150(early 80s body) with over 800,000 miles on it.Still chugging around and I will have to believe her due to the sound of the engine and the condition of the body .Sounds like the old thing is only running on 3 Cylinders but it still won't give up the ghost even if the truck itself already has.She has driven the truck from Cali all the way to Alabama(Current Location) and it never died!Gotta Love a Ford!

well, my 81 has 159,000 and runs decent. My dad's 86 has just over 300,000 and runs fine no rebuild or any thing and a guy at work has a 91 with like 450,000 on his but had a head gasket changed.

If I can't figure out why it won't fire,147,000 might be all there is on my 89 f250.
