WOW ... a 93 with 31,000, thats amazing. Mine has 370000 on it. Going to need a clutch soon. Thinking of getting another engine and building it up and swaping it in when I do the clutch

Isn't it a shame???

From all the response to this site - the endurance of these engines - that they're no longer made. It just seem's like there should be a place in the scheme of things - for a truck engine that doesn't have to run at several thousand RPM's to function effectively.

And is economical to boot.

my 95 flareside 4x4 w/ m5od just turned 100,000 miles. Dad has 2 trucks w/ 300, the 87 2wd 3 speed w/ od has 145,000 miles, and his 83 stepside 2wd w/ 3 speed on column has had three engines, the first one the carb. went bad and dumped all the gas and it threw out a rod. The second one was just built from a couple different scrap engines, but the last one is an actual rebuilt motor from big a auto parts, and been purring ever since. So the mileage is unknown on the truck but it has to have at least 250,000 miles on the truck. I know the odometer has gone over at least twice. Oh and that truck is on it's third 3 speed, he used to do a lot of towing with it.

I am proud to say that I was No. 14 to respond to this thread way back on page one, and I am impressed with the longevity of this thread. I think this might have to be one of the best, if not the best, threads on FTE? If you are a moderator and reading this, what sayest thou?

BTW, time has not been on my side, but the old 300 is all screwed back together, with metal timing gears, a fresh oil pan, brass freezeplugs, and a spiffy new Corroless Base Coat / New Ford Grey top coat paint job. All I am waiting on now is a good weekend and some friends to swap out the 302 amd put the old girl back in her rightful place, the engine compartment of my truck.

Dave

i'm right there w/you. i started this thread almost a year ago before i even bought my truck. i was just hoping a few ppl would reply to reassure that buying a 300 w/100k miles was wise. i find myself looking at this thread all the time to see the updates. its really amazing how strong these little engines are. i put about 25k miles on it since feburary and havn'e had a single problem w/it. i even had over 2k pounds in the bed w/2.73's out back and it pulled up hill fine (took a while though). i'm thinking of printing this thread out and keeping it w/me at all times. the next time somebody says that they like my truck if only it had a v8 (cause aparantly v8 = power)they're gonna get a few pages thrown at them.

I just turned 90k with mine here the other day and all I have to say is I am sooooo impressed with the inline 6. My truck actually runs better with 1000 lbs of weight in back than it does empty. And I am still getting about 17-18 MPG with it too...

I am sure glad I bought this truck...

1979 F-150

1979 F-150. 196,000 miles (296,00 possibly).

Bought the truck about a month ago for almost nothing. Brakes were shot, water in brake lines, bad U-joints, bad clutch, transmission bearings worn out, gas fill tube cracked, back window broken, leaks oil from everywhere....etc

Engine runs like a top. Doesn't burn oil. Still pulls pretty well.

300 6 is the only part of this whole truck that doesn't need a lot of work.

105k on her, she's had the crap beaten out of her so many times its hard to count.

My friend bought the truck used as a first vehicle at 16. When he passed at 17, i took the truck as a first vehicle. I'm now 18, and trust me, for a couple months i drove it like a 16 year old would. Now i take good care of her cuz thats all she's ever done to me.

EGR valve being a POS and a leaky TB gasket are the only engine problems i've had.

She had 75k on her when i took out the original spark plugs. She still ran, but that was the biggest hp tune up i've ever done.

300 has had a valve tick since i got it, i'm not worrying. I'll agree, she seems to run better with weight in the bed. I have 3.55 gears and 31" tires. She likes to cruise at 70-75 just fine at night when the highway is clear.

I tow my father's 4 ton trailer with the Gravely lawn tractor and other tools on there. She pulls like a champ. My father has a 2002 F-350 PSD, when Towing is exactly the same, only scaled down. The 300 really is the poor man's diesel.

I love the motor to death. The only thing that i'll trade her for is a 460, which sadly is in the works.
