Morning all. I finally finished the wife's fire pit project. Turned out well. Had a fire last night in hopes of seeing the northern lights. It was chilly but that fire pit once going will put out some heat.
Good morning Oregon and everyone everywhere else. 8°, very frosty with some high wispy clouds that have moved in. Weather Witch Doctors are saying it will be clear for the next 5 days anyway. No one is out doing the snow dance! I'm wondering if I should tease the snow gods by taking the plow off of the UTV.
I like your fire pit Rich. I drew up plans to make one with brick or cinderblock but haven't decided where we want it at just yet. Where did you get yours at? I like the looks of yours and the screen top for it.
Found it on craigslist. It's 3/16 steel. And yeah it's got a screen top with a door. The top come off easy enough. Was professionally made. Best thing was it was free! Just had to go up to Woodland Wa to get it.
It took a few weeks to coordinate pick due to various things and when the wife mentioned my chemo he said it was ours no cost. I accuse my wife of pulling the cancer card to get it for free. She didn't but it makes for a better story. Nice guy and there are still good folks out there. Weighs 225 pounds. Gets good and hot once the fire gets going and all the metal heats up.
The lights do all sort of colors and stuff. Something the wife likes. Me I just turned them off. I don't need all the light. Can't see the stars and satellites with them on. LOL
I was wondering if that was homemade Rich. I downloaded a couple of your pics and enlarged them. In all my looking, I’ve never seen one that big or with that size or shape spark arrester.
Had a front yard visitor today, dogs spotted her first while staring out the window. Watched her for probably 30-40 minutes. Long enough to figure out she was a she. She was really proficient at mousing and digging out a hibernating sage rat. Hadn’t seen that one before.

Best I could get.
Excellent job! You're obviously experienced with that stuff!
Belated good morning Oregon and everyone everywhere else. Started out at 8° this morning and are in a heat wave at 23.2 now.
Had problems with our hunting area pop up this morning and we've been on 5 way calls trying to figure out what we are going to do. We have already put in for our controlled hunt permits. ODFW has now released information that the land baron company - Canadian Timber Land owners, Manulife, Forest Management Division, (formerly Hancock), have terminated their contract and cooperation with ODFW and the state of Oregon for people to have recreational access to Manulife/Hancock Timber Land. As of May 31, 2026, all Hancock/Manulife Forest lands (including a sizeable chunk of the Coast Range) will be closed to the public. They comprise 33% (ODFW figures) of our Controlled Hunt area. Manulife is going to release information on permit access later, claiming it will be before the Controlled Hunt application deadline. If 2 tracks of forest in Coos County is any type of example, they will be charging $350 to $450 for a permit to hunt, camp, fish or recreate on land they control. This is really going to cause problems with our hunting. USFS has got to stop this sell off of public lands and start reclaiming some of it.
