People wonder why American auto companies willingly invest so heavily in robotics. Pretty easy to see.
My sister-in-law works for Honda in Marysville, OH. She's been there since 1984. She made a great living there as an assembly line worker. She took all kinds of training when offered and she eventually moved up into production line management. The UAW has come into that plant dozens of times to campaign for membership benefits. The workers there are smart enough to realize their working conditions are already good and their pay is commensurate with other manufacturers so they remain non-union. She has the ability to hire and fire people based on their skills and work ethic. Lazy workers don't last because there are plenty of others who want a good paying job. The company has a generous 401K plan and offers good medical benefits because they have to so they can attract quality workers. The workers have to produce to keep the company solvent. It is a mutually beneficial relationship.
The UAW (and unions in general) served a valuable purpose years ago. The problem is now, much like in our Congress, we have too many uninformed people making decisions about things they have no expertise in. For example - the benefit packages the UAW saddles motor companies with are ridiculous. Funding them requires BILLIONS of dollars each year. The model is not economically sustainable yet ignorance allows it to grow and continue. The father of a good friend of mine worked for GM for 35 years or so. He passed away in 1991. As part of his retirement pension my friend's Mom received a new GM car (Buick) every three years, until she passed in 2020. BTW - throw in medical coverage for life as well into that pension package. That is plain out blackmail and is exactly why we pay $90,000 for a $45,000 truck today.
You took the words out of my mouth. And I will add that Unions demand more money for workers so the price of products go up. Now they need more money to purchase those items.....inflation. The end user never wins. In my business, like all, when the cost of my supplies go up, I have to raise my prices..... inflation. Unions are kinda like welfare, don't want to work hard for your money and do a good job? That's OK we will protect you and make sure you get paid....trophy for everyone.
Surely they are just asking for a lot because they know they won’t get it. 4 day work week, 46% raise, etc is laughable. On the news this morning the union guy said it’s their turn to make money because ford had 60% profit increase in 2020 and they only got 6% raise.
important question. Will used vehicles go back up now?
Who cares. The new trucks are ugly. F the unions. $1800 to WHEEL 2 fitness machines 200 ft. from the loading dock to my expo booth. That's highway fleecing. The union management thugs are guilty of everything they blame corporate of doing.

So true. It is amazing that so many folks talk about "CEO pay" yet turn a blind eye to the financial shenanigans going on at the UAW headquarters... Literally the people who were elected to protect the common worker stealing from their membership.
I've always said - follow the money. Still holds true here too.
If the big 3 is smart have Texas ship all the illegals to them, no need to move, Mexico is coming here.
Look at the photos coming out of NYC. It's the likes of Senegalese, Chinese, and North Africans that are crossing the southern border and immediately released into the US population. Mexico or Guatamalans/Hondurans/Salvadrians/etc are the least of it.

well, I’m positive they could perform on an assembly line just fine. Doesn’t require much.
I'm retired from a tractor mfg. I started in 78 2nd shift, best pay in town or area. 1 supervisor for 100 hard working guys, also had a crazy super on 1st. I was new but union member, crazy told me I was working on Sunday that week, I said I couldn't that Sunday. He told me he didn't care what religion I was that I was working. Sure glad I had the union. I may have worked 1 Sunday in the next 25 years and it was by choice. 40+% in 4 years, sounds like everything else in the economy. And that profit sharing is taxed at 42%. Salary is about 30% of the workers. Yes the company insurance is good till you retire and you lose it. Some points of the union are not the best, they will protect lazy @sses from getting walked out. In right to work states at least my plant the union is required to protect scabs. The robots, all looks pretty good and you never see the bad days. That was almost every day, and it will stop an entire line and the line goes on base pay then till it's fixed. The union should be careful with that 4 day week. They can be 16 hour days. My Dad worked there and was on old insurance plan provided by company, he didn't lose his because that was in the contract at the time, he has passed but my Mother is still covered. She has been covered since 1960, not bad since my Dad only worked there 30 years. I do support the Union. Just my opinion.
