Good morning Oregon and everyone everywhere else. 52 and climbing. Clear blue skies. Seems like it will be a good day to mow lawns and do some spring cleaning, including the camper.
A little more of the story of the fishing trip yesterday.
Yesterday morning my partner and I took an 81 year old disabled veteran and retired LEO and his young caretaker on a fishing trip on the Siletz River. Gary F. was the first Chief of Police of the King City Police Department when they established the new agency back in the mid 80's. Neither he nor his caretaker, 'Elvis', knew much of anything about Salmon Fishing, and as we found out, not much about boating either.
Gary F. had gone out and bought an 18' Smoker Craft and some new poles so Elvis could take him fishing but needed clues on how use the equipment. My partner (Gary V) and I were kind of under the impression they knew a little bit about boating and fishing. We were not entirely accurate in our assessment. So it became an interesting - fun adventure full of more than just one surprise. Gary F. was full of stories from his years at LAPD & LASO before migrating to Oregon many years ago and then his time at Washington County S.O. and as Chief in King City.
We gave boating lessons, fishing lessons including how to tie up a herring rig, 360's and other terminal tackle. It was interesting watching Elvis trying to keep the boat in a straight line with the tiller kicker motor and how to watch the speed and the deep channels on the sonar.
We all had a good time (which was the important thing) and they were good students. The only problem cropped up when we were docking at Chinook Bend. After Elvis made several aborted attempts to get into the dock in the river current compounded by the tidal current. I had to take over and bring the boat into the dock. We assured him that he would 'get it' with a little practice. A river with a healthy current compounded by tidal currents is not the best place to learn some of the finer intricacies of boating.
The final problem was that the vehicle they had was not a good launch and recovery vehicle. It appears fine for towing, but on a steep unpaved boat ramp, the front wheel drive combined with the tongue weight on the back, the Van lacked the traction to pull the boat on the trailer out of the water and up the slick mud & rock ramp.
We painted a few fish on the sonar but had no bites or take downs. It was still a good day and all had fun. Elvis said he learned a lot but would still like to learn more before he took Gary F. out on solo trips.

A belated Welcome Aboard Mike. What part of Eastern Oregon are those Wheat Fields located near?
Good evening Ford Drivers.
The traffic here is horrible.
It might be french toast this year.
That woould work just fine for us. But we carry half of the annual Krusteaz Factory output in the camper so we can offer them a choice if they want......
We usually have a bag or two of the Costco size Krusteaz pancake mix here.
The last gtg Renee and I did the french toast and seem to go well.
And we will bring homemade syrups and jams with us.

Good afternoon Oregon and everyone everywhere else. Home from PDX. Now to go to work with sping setup on the camper and getting ready to leave in the morning.
Thanks Chris. Just a 'routine' checkup and screening. Hopefully nothing shows up that I wasn't born with.
Drove to Portland got some new batteries for the 85 at Costco. Also stopped at Harbor Freight for some fuel line disconnect tools as what I had wasn't cutting it on the 95, whose rear bed continues to dangle in the air from a hoist.
Batteries went in fine and disconnect tools did the trick. I'll cut the old harness off tomorrow and get the new sender assembly in and then get the 95 buttoned up.
Good evening Oregon and everyone everywhere else.
Camper and pickup spit and polished. Camper is De-winterized and only needs food and clothes. 0900 departure in the morning for La Pine State Park campground. Got a space overlooking the Deschutes River.
