i've read something about it affecting line pressure or something, but don't quote me on that. There's way too much conflicting information about it. I'm just gonna clean/replace it and check it off the list of potential problems.

Unplugged ICP sensor and went for a drive. Noticed it’s running significantly better. Some oil visible when you disconnect it, probably warrants replacement. Still low on power and shifting hard, but less of a dog.

Well, this is a start. I'm surprised your mechanic didn't find this. At any rate, a new FORD (yes really) ICP and a new pigtail. RiffRaff would be glad to help you out. Diesel O-Rings could as well.

What Dan said, new ICP for sure (and Ford or IH sensor only, no aftermarket!) but I'd inspect the harness closely before cutting in a new pigtail. If OE wires are good, cutting it up for a new pigtail just opens up more potential problems. Clean the oil off the harness with brake clean and inspect.

But is it possible for the sensor to be bad without throwing a code?

If it's leaking oil....it's bad.

Agreed. Or it will be.

The fact that it ‘runs better unplugged’ means it IS bad.

Does not necessarily throw a code when bad, but sends bad data to PCM.

Gotcha. Will order a new one today. Ford ones are pretty damn expensive compared to the $15 aftermarket ones :/

@Calidiesel73red Use @Riffraff Performance or @DieselOrings for your sensor and most OEM parts needs. Both of these shops are long time members of the 7.3L community, stand by their products, stand by their service and offer very competitive prices on genuine OEM parts.

100% agreement with Sous on this matter. Those 2 places are consistently the cheapest for OEM parts and have good service.

Yup, good info all around from the guys...as usual. Stay patient. Believe me, we have all been through it one way or another. It sounds like you got a VERY abused and neglected truck.

Did some number-crunching to see where I stand financially. Obviously some estimates are gonna be off, but I think it's generally accurate. I am also missing some necessary items. The list doesn't address non-essential repairs like 4x4, interior, intake air heater, etc. Does this project still make any financial sense? Ignore "Mechanic #2" line-item, I didn't end up paying for it.

Some of those are somewhat off. You gotta decide though. That tag issue would bother me most LOL. Sell it for 2k and call it done.

I’d like to see it run right before committing to a large investment.

If it does not have blow-by, the engine is worth $1000-1500. The (bare) cab with clean title is worth $1000. Axles can bring $500 each, $500 for used transmission, $250 for t-case, $100 for good bumpers, $40 for a grill, etc. This does require time and a place to park the hulk while you sell it off.

I have paid $1000 for trucks similar to yours.
