You might not need a CDL at over 10,000 but you do need to keep electric logs.

What state?
I drive a F350 DRW (14k) and often tow my custom Stacker Trailer (capacity of 19.5k).
CA DMV requires weight of trailer be added to my trucks registration (have 35k stickers), since trailer has perm plates.
I have a NON-COMMERCIAL CLASS A drivers license and no logs needed.
100% legal! I don’t tow for $$, only my personal stuff

Same in Nevada. Getting this license is not a big deal but it takes a couple of days to get.

Every state. 10,001-26,000lbs. Only exceptions are private recreational use and a 150 mile exception.

Only misnomer I said was it’s not including a trailer, it actually includes the trailer so even an F150 or F250 could be caught. Now that doesn't mean you can’t disconnect or have to say where you connected (not that you should be dishonest).

I also think everyone is having to go to electronic logs now at least in my state.?

This is if you are COMMERCIAL (for income) driver. Most of use are using these trucks for recreational purposes.

Long thread. Can't read it all.

When one buys a pickup, if you want to use it - a few things to consider:

1. Diesel
2. 4x4
3. 4 door
4. Long bed only
5. One ton minimum

Purchase/order to your taste/budget beyond the essentials, enjoy.

Yes this is what I use my F250s for and what someone above was asking about.

I guess theres millions of us RVers that dont have CDLs and should? Now ive heard it all. A large RV bus can have GVWR of 30,000-40,000lbs. CDL is not required.
I don't know where people come up with this stuff. If its not being used for commercial or business whatever yall wanna “label” it, a CDL is not required.

I have a F350 GVWR 14,000lbs & a 5er RV with a 15,000lb GVWR. Guess im a law breaker?

I started a new thread about this

While is true the the federal cdl rules exempt rvs, many states have adopted their own cdl requirement for rvs.

n most states, RV operators are listed under the exemptions

Check this list to find out if your state requires a CDL.

3 states require a cdl for rv with combined over 26k
16 states require a cdl for varying conditions of gvwr involving rv’s

http://changingears.com/rv-sec-state-rv-license.shtml

is my 20k 5th camper pulled by my 14k truck exempt???? Depend on the state.

is my 30k flat bed and 14k truck that pulls my personal racing cars exempt???? Depends on the state.

most states allow RVs with a class D. Some states require class A or B for over 26k. Class D only, not good enough in those states.

In Nevada, No matter what RV you pull or drive - if combined weight over 26,000# you would need a non commercial drivers license. Like I said before this is not hard to get but time consuming. The questions are posted on the DMV website. These regulations will only increase and so will the penalties. You maybe lucky and your state may not have these requirements.

Ah, so the >10k and electronic logs applies to Commercial drivers, Got it. Thanks.

https://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/sites/fmcs...o_HOS_2016.pdf

In general it is a truck, or truck-tractor with a trailer, that is involved in interstate commerce and:
  • Weighs (including any load) 10,001 pounds (4,536 kg) or more, or
  • Has a gross vehicle weight rating or gross combination weight rating of 10,001 pounds (4,536 kg) or more, or
  • Is transporting hazardous materials in a quantity requiring placards.

the place cards gotcha is interesting.

In the north east the white marshmallow looking black powder charged are considered low yield explosives and require place cards posted on your vehicle to transport.

so now, if you have place card you need logs.
