I decided it was time for a new pair of hunting boots this year. My old combat boots finally wore out and were never waterproof, and my Alaska tennis shoes (Xtra Tuff neoprene boots) while waterproof aren’t very good for hiking long distance. I looked into Danner and Irish Setter and found that most of their more affordable boots are imported now. I wanted something leather and rebuildable also.
After sending emails to both companies asking about a veterans discount I got a reply right away from Danner saying they don’t offer one, but they gave me a 25% off coupon code. I still haven’t heard back from Irish Setter in over a week.
I decided on the Danner Elk Hunters. Hand made here in Oregon from US materials, full grain leather upper, Gore-Tex, and 400 gram thinsulate. With the discount I got them for $230 after discount.
L.L. Beans....... Hand made in Maine. USA all the way.
We used to have our Police Motorcycle boot custom made by Danner. We had to stand on a piece of paper they sent to us and trace the outline of our foot and then there was a chart that we had to take about 20 measurements for. Took about a month once we sent them in.
When we switched to Crary, they actually sent a fellow down to Roseburg to take measurements
The hunting boots I wear now are from Cabela's under Cabela's brand. Leather, 1000 grams thinsulate, gortex, and high tops. I've had them for over 8 years now. My feet have never been wet in them even when wading across the Salmon River with them during deer and elk hunts. Seems like I paid $120.00 for them on sale. My elk hunting partner wears Danner that look an awful lot like the Elk Hunter you pictured, but they are black. He loves his.
I partly went Danner because they are fairly local so getting any problems resolved should be easier. I have a pair of their wildland fire boots that fit me well but they have the raised logger style heel and heavy clunky soles.
I finally heard back from Irish Setter a week and a half later. Basically their response was: We don’t offer a veterans discount. Ask your local retailer.
Good morning Oregon and everyone everywhere else. 35 and starting to rain...
Going to Cabela's today. Have to return a dehydrator. It's been used pretty heavily in the last couple of months and the heater in it quit working. It's only 2 1/2 months old.
I think you're just using that as an excuse to go to Cabela's Jim...lol What else do you have in mind...lol
John, the catalog is 598 pages long! How do you expect me list all of that here?:-missing
Not going to get to go to Cabela's today after all. We'll have to go tomorrow. The warranty runs out on Thursday so....
I have a meeting tonight and the Warden doesn't necessarily want to go. It's 20 miles from here and between us and Cabela's. The meeting starts off with a Board of Directors dinner meeting and a Committee meeting at 1730. She doesn't (& frankly I don't either) like the restaurant. Since the Warden doesn't want to go to the meeting tonight (I'm on the Board of Directors and have to go) I don't want to drive her all the way home and then turn right around and go back. That will turn it into a 170 mile day instead of just a 130 mile day.
In addition, the general membership meeting is at 1930 tonight and we are having a firearms 'show and tell' competition tonight. I plan on taking two or three of the collection with me and don't want to drag them to Portland Metro with me. I'm going to have to stop by the vault and pull them out as it is and that's 15 miles from here - and that will take a little time. Planning on taking a Spanish American War era .43 Spanish Falling Block, a Dragoon #3 revolver with shoulder stock and probably my "pepper box". I was thinking about the American Test Eagle .30 cal (7.65 mm) US Army German Luger, but I'm going to save that for another day. Might take the .45 peace maker though.

What a coincident that Cabela's catalog has 598 pages and your post is #598. That has to mean something...lol
