Man, that sucks Pete. Coming from someone who has also lost data for decades. At work and home.
I don't use it as I typically have backup hard drives (Windows and now Mac), but Cloud-based backup, especially with the phones, might be something to look at.
I lost some early 6.0 data not realizing how to play with the iCloud and my phone, so I just keep the phone backed up with the iMac.

On a different note, I can only find 1 of my 4 tadpoles in the fish pond. But now, I got these 3 frogs and I think they must of ate them.

I've been the same. I'm not putting my stuff in the cloud even with the ability to share between devices.
I have a story. Mr. Gottschalt, our bio teacher at Southern had a tadpole tank so we could see nature. Before we had to dissect frogs for class.
Camburn's Creek ran through my aunt's cranberry bog next door to the farm, complete with frogs.
Mr. Gottschalt was quite surprised that one of his tadpoles grew so quickly without him noticing. The entire class was laughing at his amazement, they saw the insertion.
By the next day, I had been rattled on.
The yard is going to get noisy unless you still have cats.

In 5th grade we had tadpoles and one toad. When the tadpoles grew up and got to be frogs they got to join the toad in the large tank.
It was not long after that we spotted the toad with frog legs sticking out it's mouth.

Those LBZ engine Dmaxes go for a premium, out here anyway: post LLY over-heater and pre-DPF, etc. Was he running a HP tune?
