Assume nothing !

I'm inclined to still say that the clips (oil diverters) are required.

The rockers you have show a rectangular (square?) face where the clips should sit.

Do you have the old rockers for comparison ?

The picture below shows my original rockers. It might help !?

No i don't have any of the old rockers anymore. It's likely that they got tossed with the rest of the stuff that was on the heads when the builder was replacing stuff.

I should check to be sure though - there's a chance I tucked the rockers away somewhere in a box. I have a tendency to do things like that ( I hoard my stuff!!)

Have a look at the previous link I posted for the stock rockers:

https://dudazps6njn84.cloudfront.net/00/s/MTIwMFgxNjAw/z/sIAAAOSwpOxZ-5M8/$_57.JPG?set_id=8800005007

EDIT: Here's another really good image of stock rockers: https://dudazps6njn84.cloudfront.net/00/s/MTIwMFgxNjAw/z/Z84AAOSws8NZ0DjL/$_57.JPG?set_id=8800005007

Yes, I'd seen that link.

Hopefully you have indeed hoarded the rockers etc.

I'm not sure if those oil diverters (or whatever their actual name is) are available in shops !?

I hope I am wrong about needing them.

Why were the OE rockers replaced with OE replacements, and OE replacements as opposed to roller rockers ?
(Hmm, budget will play a part I'm sure.)

I looked at some of my old OEM rockers.....the angle of the oiling hole is the same as your new ones. Meaning the trajectory of the oil from the pusrods is going to hit the outboard side of the valve cover.

Bottom line? I would use the oil deflector dealies.

FMJ - Nice heads!!!

Guess I'll make a phone call to the shop and double check that he doesn't have them.

If he does, I'll have to go pick them up. I never ended up checking on my end this weekend - too much going on.

Thanks for the info guys. Really good info Filthy.

Called the shop and he still has all of the old rockers and the oil diverters / oil retainers. Not sure what to call them.

Really good catch from you guys. This is why I'll be posting lots of pics before I start everything up. There's just too many things for me to look at and an outside perspective is very appreciated.

Thanks for all the help so far. Stick with me here. I'm almost at the finish line!!

I know we all love pics, so I'll post some of the double roller set I'm running. Who knows, you guys might find something else wrong? I hope not lol.

Thank you FB.

We caught nothing. You caught that the oil deflectors were missing, and f$$k knows why they weren't fitted !

Was the block thoroughly acid cleaned (or whatever they call it) ?

Just a thought....might not be a bad idea to install your fuel pump now....so you won't be fighting it later. It's easier if #1 piston is on the compression stroke, too.
I don't think you'll be fighting the timing chain cover, either.

Good goop on the pump arm, a little oil on the eccentric.....another step closer....

I was told the block was hot tanked twice to get all the junk off of it.

The heads were also dunked twice, but they look shiny cause of the "cast" paint that the shop put on them before assembling.

Block never got any paint before assembly. Wish I would have given it a paint job cause I have lots of masking and taping to do now

Good call on the fuel pump - It is indeed a paint to install once everything is in. I should also start fabbing my bracket for the fuel pump regulator. Kind of essential for the 1406 while using a stock pump.

More of a set of questions than an update. Update pics to follow this post.

What the heck is this threaded port in the block?

From my old photos, it looks like there was nothing inside the port when I pulled the motor. No plug either!

What is it, where does it go, and should I cap it back off before I throw the block back in the truck?

Here it is again from another angle.

Here's another threaded port - kitty corner from the first pics... except this one is right beside the fuel pump.

I have no idea what this port does... there used to be a plug in this port. Looks like the shop forgot about another thing for my block

To me it looks like a 3/8" NPT port (directly beside the fuel pump) although I have not measured it yet. I have no idea what it does or what I should be doing with it.

Any suggestions/hints/ideas on what to do with these ports?

Update to follow... sorry for the spoilers LOL

Update... Paint Night? Paint Weekend!

Masked off.

Attachment 286158

Attachment 286159

Like my new turkey pan?

Attachment 286160

All mounting surfaces covered. If they weren't covered, a lint-free dry rag was close by to wipe off excess stuff.

Attachment 286161

I sprayed some brake cleaner onto a scotchbright pad, carefully and slowly scrubbed down the block, then dabbed dry with a clean lint-free rag.

Carefully carefully sprayed some Metal Ready onto the block surface, holding several rags below/above/beside the spray area to keep from over spraying or dripping anywhere.

White stuff on the block is the Metal Ready after being applied/dried.

Attachment 286162

Attachment 286163

Attachment 286164

Mixed up my POR-15 Engine enamel. Started looking like this.

Attachment 286165

20 minutes of mixing later... FYI This colour is Buick Green.

Attachment 286166

First application (brushed).

Attachment 286167

Hard to see from the photo, but still lots of grey/brown showing through.

Attachment 286168

Let dry over night. Second coat applied (by brush).

Attachment 286169

Attachment 286170

Here is the final colour in the shadows:

Attachment 286171

After the paint had dried for 5-6 hours... Started chasing all the threads on the block. Notice I was extremely careful around the important areas like the spark plug holes? 3 hours I'll never get back, but turned out really nice.

Attachment 286172

Did these threads 5-6 times each... Yummy...

Attachment 286173

Also painted a few other small parts... But that was my paint nite turned paint weekend.

More to come.

The threaded port next to the fuel pump face should indeed be plugged.

It can be used for an oil temp, oil pressure, or oil pressure safety switch if required.

First it was the oil deflectors and now this !!

Why on earth is a freeze plug missing ?

Check that all of the freeze plugs have been fitted with sealant (RTV).

Engine's looking very nice !

Should I mention that a oil insert/bung/adapter was forgotten too? Lol.

It's the small things Hopefully no more than what we've already discussed.

Freeze plug is missing to add on block heaters. One for each side. It gets down to -50 celsius here in saskatchewan. Gotta heat the beast before it starts

Thanks for the compliments on the motor. Took forever on the weekend
