I knew I was going to spend more money. Goliath needs ***** joints too. I ordered XRF upper and lower as I had good luck with them so far. Hubs are at the local Advanced Auto@200 each. I need one auto hub too. What else do I need for this project as I've never done a 04 front end. I want this to be a one shot deal.
While you're in there I do the hub seals, they're the big round seals maybe a set of U-joints if they look questionable. If your hubs are shot maybe upgrade to some Warns?
I don't know if it's shot, but it's really not in free mode when you try to spin it. Maybe take it apart and clean it
Don't know if you know this but if you have the auto hubs, the mechanism inside the locking hub is a lot like an old Bic push button pen. A vacuum pulse (switched to 4wd) draws it in and the mechanism holds it. Then a second pulse (when switched to 2wd) draws it in then the mechanism flips and releases it.
So with that said, I've seen it a lot where one hub will " get out of sync " with the other side, usually do to a bad seal.
To get it back in sync after seal replacement, I apply a quick pulse of vacuum to change the status of the mechanism inside. You can test this by jacking it up and hook a vacuum source directly to the fitting near the upper ball joint.
I hope this is clear enough.

You're going to need the Hub seals and I highly recommend getting the OTC seal driver it makes life much easier. I do have one sitting in the attic...
A little update. Now that I've been driving it for awhile, a few little issues have come up. Nothing major mind you just minor stuff. First, I changed out the factory steering stabilizer, had a real fun getting that off. Changed it out with a Skyjacker one to match the shocks. They ride pretty good so I can't complain. The fan motor was making a little noise so that got changed out. I also adjusted the door strikers so everything closes as they should and not rattle going down the ruff roads. Next is a big ticket, ball joints, seals and hubs. I just have to get some motivation. Other than this, the truck runs good. I'm very happy. After the few mechanical items, it's going to get the big detail so it looks as good as it runs. That will include the frame paint and other items.
