Thanks, Jeff. I never imagined when I started this thread that it would get more than maybe a few hundred hits and maybe a handful of posts, before fading off into oblivion. --I certainly didn't expect over 500 posts, over 25,000 hits and grow to 30+ pages.
However, the object wasn't for it to have a lot of any of this. The main purpose was just to show some things I was doing and the parts I was using and, hopefully, that maybe someone could use something in this information or, get an idea from it, that might help them with their own project.
And we/I appreciate the information. When I rebuild my '99 Explorer trans that's what I'll do. Your directions were explicit.
Thanks, Alex.
....'99 Explorer transmission.... is it a 4R70W from behind a 5.0L?
....I haven't been too motivated to work much on my 4R lately because it's just so hot and humid here right now and, I haven't posted any more pictures of it because it just didn't really seem like anyone had any interest in this transmission or what I was doing during the rebuild of it. ....most people are stuck on C-4's, C-6's or AOD's. I guess the 4R70W is 'too far out there' for most or maybe electronics intimidates some (?).
That's ok. I guess the 4R70W is just one of the best kept secrets out there and people don't even consider it because they're looking for something 'easier' to install, disregarding the multitude of advantages the 4R70W has over an AOD --and especially over a C-4 or C-6.
If you're interested in it, I would post other photos of mods I will be making to it. ....but first, it's gonna hafta cool off around here, before I get back to work on it.
Yes it is. It has 270k on the original transmission and engine and just took my wife and I on an over 1400 mile trip last week. I'll be rebuilding it some time in the future so am looking forward to your mods. The guy that rebuilt the A4LD in my '94 Ranger said the 4R70W is the best transmission Ford made. I do have a bullet proof C6 in my '68 F250 with a 460 engine.

Concur.... same objectives as I had. ..My LBB thread has swelled to around 164,000 views.

You've done some cool things with your truck and I imagine that fuel injection and an overdrive are the two best improvements that have been made to it, with the greatest returns on their investment.
The potential of a truck is greatly limited when you don't have an overdrive transmission and, carburetion just doesn't match the repeatability and reliability of fuel injection.
I left work a couple of hours early on Friday and went straight to the salvage yard (I drove my truck to work Friday). I spied a '69 F100 long bed that wasn't there a few weeks ago so, I went over to check it out.
Ever since I've had my truck (over 4 years), it hasn't had a headliner in it. I opened the door on the wrecking yard '69 and looked up to see a fairly decent white headliner with white trim around it. It was much better than what I had (which was nothing) and would do until I can buy a new one or make a new one.
The chrome Ranger headliner trim was still in my truck but, has some surface rust specs in it. I don't know yet if it will polish out but, I decided for now to bead blast the white trim pieces, paint them semi-gloss black (since my interior is black) and install them.
I had some anti-static foil-backed bubble wrap so, I doubled it up, sprayed on some 3M adhesive and attached it to the top side of the headliner.
I got it all put in just a little bit ago. (there's some strange reflection making the big spot on the headliner. It's not actually the headliner that looks like that).
....as I also do with many Bumps or Dents in the wrecking yard, I checked out the data plate to see what the axle code was. This donor truck has a "B9" 9-inch rear end code --that would be a 4-pinion Traction-Lok, 3.50 with a 28-spline differential. You don't come across a factory Traction-Lok in the Bumps very often.

Fine work amigo, you are lucky to live in an area that still has old trucks showing up in jy's. In Baja they are mostly driven until the rust eats them.

There are 3 Bumps at this particular wrecking yard: a '71 a '72 and now this '69. I wouldn't mind having the Traction-Lok 9-inch 3rd member from the truck that donated the headliner.
I know another place about 15 miles from where I live that has 5 short bed F100s ranging from '67-'72 there. All these trucks are fairly rough but they do still have some useable parts on them. There's a '69 Ranger there that still has its grille and a '67 with a straight painted front bumper I would like to get. When the weather cools off some more, I plan to go back to get a better look at the '69 Ranger grille and maybe get the painted front bumper.
I just read your entire thread this morning. Just amazing work. A great insperation. Once it gets light outside I have to go and look which tranmission my 98 Explorer has in it.
Thank you for the great posts and all the information.

I'm glad if you found some information in this thread that was inspirational and that would maybe to help you with your truck.
....on the 4R70W. If you look at the sticker on the door jamb of the Explorer, the transmission code you are looking for (for a 4R70W) will be code "U."

I know what you mean. I started a thread on "the other site" that has grown to over 3600 posts, 241 pages, and over 237,000 hits! I've created a monster! It.... is.... alive.
OK, I got it. It's not the 4R70w, but its been a good transmission. I had it rebuilt at 198K. The reverse serve(?) was cracked in half. Now it has 231K on it and runs fine.
Here are the pics of the decal:
