thanks guys!

I have done most of the steps listed. I do know it needs the tranny and rear end fluids changed still, needs a rear pinion seal.. not terribly leaky but it does leak.

OMG the previous owners hack fixes... I just shake my head... the carb with orange silicone, the points had a cow ear tag in there to stop them from arcing etc. still finding interesting stuff...

All lights are working. All gauges except the fuel gauge is working. I am planning to buy a new tank and filler neck and (name escapes me at 9 am) the fuel pickup and fuel level thingy lol

rad was dumped and filled a couple times. guess stuff is just making it's way loose. Going to put a new thermostat in it. thinking a normal or cooler range one. not sure if I will drive it in the winter.

My brother was bugging me to put in power brakes. says it's just a matter of changing out the current master cylinder to one with the brake booster and then hooking up a vac line to it, which is fairly close!

I really wish i had power steering lol. I hurt my right hand when jacking up the trailer to get grumpy off of it. I somehow tore a 1/4 by 1/2" rectangle of skin off the inside of my palm... its taking its time healing lol. feels amazing in the shower and when using hydrogen peroxide on it :X

Right now my goal is to get it to the glass shop before any rain or snow comes down. I have a "scratched" no tint windshield that I got in on a discount. lower pass side has about a 1.5" scratch that is barely noticeable. not like grumpy is pristine garage find lol. Also my uncle gave me a rear window out of a 77 f100 that he had replaced with a sliding window back in the day. It has sat in his quonset since 80? Glass guy got a seal for both windows and I just got the call that it goes in thursday lol. Someone's ears must have been burning!

then on the list is the thermostat, going to change oil and filter again, probably get the tranny sucked out and filled at a garage as I dont have the sucker thing (I know a guy), and then the rear end checked and brakes all bled and new fluid at same time. If time/budget allows, I will get that rear pinion seal changed out to.

oh yeah. anyone notice the hood and fenders are allot more white?

When you do your trans oil change your probably better off dropping the pan so that you can see how much metal and clutch material has collected. There should be a metal screen in there to collect the metal bits. Wanna see white, look out my window. 2" so far and another 4 to come, this is supposed to be a harvest moon tonite not the santa express. No lol today but at least the house is getting clean. Housework sux if you cant take a saw & hammer to it.

"Probably get the tranny sucked out and filled at a garage as I don't have the sucker thing (I know a guy).

Glad I don't know that guy, I was thinking you had an auto for awhile, my bad I'm still learning to read. The last I knew on most standards you either look for a drain plug on the driver side near the bottom of the trans or remove the lowest bolt on the tail shaft that joins it to the tranny. The plug on the side should take an 3/8 open end wrench. On some trans there will be a plate held on by about 6 bolts, that would be where the PTO bolts on. If you take it off you can shine a trouble light into it and use your phone to video it and do a minor trans inspection. The plate quite often is near the bell housing on the bottom half of trans side, usually on passenger side. Some newer and/or larger trans have a plate on both sides.

A silly farmer trick is to flush out the tranny with used motor oil and leave the drain plug out until it stops dripping then refill. The theory being is that used motor oil still has detergent in it and it will wash out the crud.Just make sure it's drained so that it doesnt break down the gear oil. May be a dumb idea but then again it may not be, a second or 23rd opinion might be helpful.

Prolly overfilled the oil bath air cleaner or was just really sloppy at filling it.

I'm curious to know what trans it has... I didn'' think 302s were offered with an NP435 or a T18/T19... from the shifter position and boot, it looks to be one of these granny-geared trannies.

Says early in thread its a 4 speed, I looked it up to see what I was getting mixed up. In the prairies everything that is the least bit oily gets mud caked, everything is dusty, lots of wind so it gets in everywhere. Looked in my chilton but it doesnt break down what trannies went with motors. I have a factory book around here that breaks down all sorts of specs and combos. Its a dealer item that came with truck, about 80 pages long.

Mine is a factory 4spd/302 combo, right and down for reverse, t-18. Hopefully not too much longer it will be replaced with a t-5 or tko or t-56

If you want to see what a NP 435 looks like go to my garage and check out the album np435. I've got about a dozen pics of it including innards through the PTO. I doubt you have a 435 as I'm under the impression they were only used behind the 351/400 or 460. the one I had was of the 31 spline tailshaft variety so that may be the difference. there is supposed to be a 28 spline version. This was a low milleage heavy useage truck and the PTO got used a lot, I still have the PTO but I may be using it again.

I was toying with my one-owner, mostly unmolested 71 F250.. reverse is right and up on its T-18 .... and discovered fuel shooting out of the side of the accelerator pump cap when blipping the throttle. Rebuild time!

Did they come with different layouts? My trans code is F = t18....according to JBG vehicle ID & Facts.

Dunno... but my code is F too.

EDIT!

Apparently, yes. T-18s came with different reverse patterns: http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/t18_t19.htm

"There are two different versions of shift control housings. The 1966-1978 versions hung two cast iron shift forks into the case, with the reverse fork itself pivoting on the side of the case. These earlier T18’s have reverse gear over to the right and up by third gear. In 1979, the reverse shifter fork was moved from the side of the case into the top cover instead and all three forks were changed and made with die-cast aluminum. This later T18 has reverse gear shift pattern over to the right and down by fourth gear."
