Got the Flow Kooler aluminum water pump in. Tim had it drop-shipped to me. Went with natural aluminum to match the heads, intake, and thermostat housing. It sure is light. I'm going to have to weigh all of the parts and see what the overall weight savings are. Gonna be lighter than a 302, much more so a 351W.
GOOD antifreeze. Any recommendations? And, given that the block will have been vatted, with the soft plugs out, and all else will be new or renewed, any need to have a coolant filter? (I think it adds complexity w/o benefit, but could have my opinion changed with good reasoning.)
I don't see the need to go with the "forever" antifreeze we discussed here some time ago. But, I want something that will prevent corrosion if changed frequently, like every two years.
Oh, and I forgot that the radiator is aluminum and weighs half what the original brass/copper one does, and the heater core was replaced with an aluminum unit. So it is absolutely imperative that good coolant be kept in the system at all times.
That may be the way I go. I've done some looking on-line and don't see anyone saying that the clear way to go is XYZ. So, maybe the Peak that I got from Sam's with distilled water would be the way to go.
And, if you don't think distilled water makes a difference, let me tell you about our Keurigs. We have one for home and use distilled water in it exclusively, and run probably 4 coffee cups worth through it a day, 7 days a week. We've used it for 2 years and have only had to clean it once. Then we bought a small travel one and took it to our kids house since their coffee pot is questionable and we'd have to take beans or ground coffee to use it anyway. We used it for a week or so and left it with the kids, telling them it had to have distilled water. But, when we started to use it the next time it was clogged up. Hot vinegar sitting in it finally got it to flow and then running it through a few times cleaned it thoroughly. And, we learned they hadn't believed us about distilled water.
I always go distilled in the coolant systems. For some reason the aluminum stuff requires it more than the cast and brass. I was always told to never use anything but distilled in my dirt bikes b/c they were all aluminum.
I use the Peak from Sam's too.
I was also going to mention to you that I am about to buy a barrel of 15W40. It has the good zinc content in it so the need for an additive wont be necessary with it.
