It is just like texting the wrong person. You just respond and somehow you are in the wrong conversation. The only ones of us that haven't done that are those who haven't sent text messages.

True. But I'm not sure how many beyond we three know or care about this one. Oh wait - even we don't care.

Let's get back to the engine. Any comments or thoughts about mocking things up using the $40 block? The hardest part of it would be cleaning it enough to take a coat of OFB paint, but that won't be bad because I've already done quite a bit of cleaning on it so I can put it in the attic - I don't like greasy stuff up there. I'm thinking that would be better in case I, for some reason, decide to go with something other than OFB.

You could just take it down to Morton and have them hot tank it for $40.

True, but that requires two trips or staying around awhile. And, doing it with Rusty. Less expensive to use a few cans of O'Reilly's brake cleaner - the good stuff. And, it isn't that bad as I've already done some of that.

That is the good stuff! The Advance Auto brand is apparently the "green" EPA approved stuff that doesn't work very well.

I know I'm late to the party but I love that water pump. I realize you're well beyond this topic but, still, I wish I had that

OK. So, I'm finally caught up and the only other time I've seen heads that nice is my friend's Dad's. He build race car motors and ports and polishes the head using a die grinder. Those are sweet and this is a VERY close second. Wish I could put those on my 460.

Jeremy! Where you been? Glad you chimed in. And I'm not well beyond that as not much has happened on the engine other than the heads came in. With the weight loss from them as well as the water pump, intake, and radiator I'm sure the truck will weigh at least 125 lbs less. So, more power and less weight, especially up front, should make for a fun drive.

You'll notice the weight difference. I'm still running pretty much stock in everything on my engine. I should qualify my statement about the heads. The only thing that I can tell is different about the port and polishing is the smoothness of the grind. When you look at the intake ports you can see the tooling. Whereas you can't on the heads that Wes does. Of course you're talking about a machine versus a person too. Not that you'll notice much of a difference at all. Very nice. I've been reading this thread over the last three days and all I can say is you're making all the right calls.

I'm going to be following this until it's finished.

As to where I've been, the job, my bikes, the race car.... It all keeps me pretty busy. There are many times that I've wanted to chime in on this thread but it was so well established with so many good ideas that all the bases were covered. But now that I'm caught up I'll definitely put in my .02 as well..

Jeremy, there are a lot of heads for the carbureted 460, it's the EFI models that there isn't much available for.

Nice! They make one for the 460, I found that when I was researching the reason for several different numbers between the earlier (up to 1991) and later 460s. What I finally found was Ford redesigned the pump to eliminate the failure I experienced. Apparently the dual polygroove belts load the pump bearings more than the vee belts and cause the bearings to fail. 1994 up pump has larger bearings, a different hub bolt pattern and heavier casting. It also takes different, longer attaching bolts.

From what I read the Flow Kooler pumps for vee belts also have larger/better bearings.

Engine Mock Up

I built the engine today! Well, the compression is probably a bit low as it has no rods nor pistons even. In fact, it doesn't have any gaskets and only a few bolts. But, the block, pan, and timing chain cover are Dupli-Color's Old Ford Blue. The passenger's side valve cover is Ford Blue and the driver's side is black - just as we left them months ago. I glass-beaded the Edelbrock intake manifold to approximate the Weiand that's soon to come, and also blasted the thermostat housing, but it obviously needs to be replaced.

I'd like to basically stay with three colors: Old Ford Blue; black; and natural aluminum. The pulleys and brackets will be black, I think, as will the air cleaner except the top. At least that's what I'm thinking. Which then begs the question what to do with the valve covers. And, I could paint/powder-coat the intake manifold if convinced it should be blue. Also, I could rethink the air cleaner, although I do want to stay with a quasi-stock look, and my remembrance is that the air cleaners were usually black.

So, the question is what do you think?
