Simply amazing! I would be afraid of the red tape the dmv here in Minnesota would make you go through registering a custom built rig like that! Took three trips just to get snowmobile transferred to a guy I sold it to at work!
That's a good point. I was thinking the same thing.
Is this registered as a newer F250 truck or as the Excursion it was? You could probably debate it either way. What defines a car?
If you took an Excursion and cut the back off and added a truck bed, I think most would still consider it an Excursion.
But since this project has half a truck frame and half an Excursion frame, a truck power train, truck interior, truck front end, but Excursion doors and roof, what would the authorities consider it? You could literally attach either VIN number to the final product.
I would want it to be an Excursion for registration purposes. Cheaper registration and annual taxes.
Insurance would be another issue entirely. You could never get a policy for a $90k truck or Excursion.
Then there's a bank loan. That wouldn't happen either.
I used to work for Saleen Mustang years ago in California and people did have trouble financing them if they didn't get the Saleen from a Saleen-authorized Ford dealership.
Will you be able to have the frame and other sand blasted parts dipped or just sprayed ? Can't wait for the finish. Found your FB pages, will follow every step.
Fast work, its sprayed already, looks like its about to start going back together soon. I suppose when the EX rear frame is welded to the SD front frame and SD running gear attached under the EX rear frame, the EX body will be mounted and welded to the SD body. Love to watch, I want one.

Here it would be really simple, you dont tell the DMV anything and you renew the registration on your 2012 F-250 pickup like nothing ever happend. no issues since all your VIN numbers match(firewall and door)

Firewall would have the F250 vin and the door would have the Excursion vin. He didn't separate it that far back. Also if the cops run a plate for a F250 truck and they are looking at an Excursion it will raise some eyebrows.

he said he plans on using the front f-250 doors, so your door tag (white sticker with all the info) will have the 2012 VIN
looks not much different then a f-250 with a topper on it. even so, what are they going to do about it? here they cant do a thing...cant say the same for some other nanny state.

Yes they can, Russ. They would impound it pending investigation.
While an Excursion resembles an F250 with a camper shell, it isn't one, and that's very apparent when a police officer runs the plate and it comes back to an F250.
Call it a typo at the DOL! "I don't understand why everyone thinks this is an f-250, it's really pissing me off!" Unless the officer is a car guy, he/she probably wouldn't even notice. Too busy making sure you don't have a weapon to pay attention to the fine detail of if it's a truck with a topper, or an Excursion.
Probably just call it a custome and leave it at that.

i highly doubt if your plates, registration, and name all match that anyone else care to look any further or even notice. They would have a hell of a time trying to impound my legally registered truck.
like i said, maybe some where else but i dont see it happening here.

I'm not saying that isn't possible. I was just addressing your assertion that there was nothing a police officer could do, by letting you know exactly what they could do.
They would have a hell of a time trying to impound my legally registered truck.
Not sure what that means, you gonna fight him?
All kidding aside, if you had a creation like this, and it was registered in the manner you described, it wouldn't be legally registered.

I won't presume to know how LEO's work in your state better than you, but I do know the CHP down here are specifically trained to look for vehicles that aren't legal.
I have a '88 GMC 1500 Truck that now has a chevy grille, tailgate and all labels and decals. It's been registered many times in different states and never has a DMV nor a police officer cared.
The truck is more F-250 than it is Excursion and more than 50% of the vehicle is F-250. For all legal purposes, this IS still an F250, even if you put Excursion badging on it. The DMV won't care and the cops won't care. The only thing I can think of is the DMV may require a structural inspection.
Insurance will care. Generally with a custom vehicle they are going to want to check this thing head to toe, especially since the frame has been compromised. That said, Insurance will still classify this as a F-250.
Now, I am absolutely NOT an expert on the F-250 to Excursion conversion however I always thought it would be less work to cut the back of the F-250 and graft the top rear part of the Excursion on to it.
