If you're in Houston, check out Shiloh shooting range for some friendly advice and a few pistols to rent. Typically when you rent a pistol at the range, you have to purchase the ammo for that pistol from the range, so if you rent multiple pistols of the same caliber, it can save you a little money.
I was so used to going to Baileys off 521/Almeda rd for so long, but they aren't the friendliest bunch as they got older. I was going there from 13-34 was the last time I went there
Look at the Kahr line of pistols for a CCW also. They are well made and shoot extremely well for their smaller size, plenty of calibers to choose from also. They are a Cadillac of small pistols IMHO. I recommend nights sights also on any CCW.
F360-6's comments about the felt recoil from these little mouse pistols (regardless of the caliber) is spot on. Typically their selling point is how small (& thus, how concealable) they are. But if the recoil is so bad, your lady won't practice with it - you haven't accomplished much. (And I might add, there in lies the secret to success for self protection: practice, practice and more practice... that's the only thing that's gong to save her life in a bad situation... not so much, the caliber of the gun she's shooting). Ya got to be able to hit what you're shooting at (and it's best if you can do that with the very first round that's fired).
The idea to go rent & shoot a few different brands and models of handguns will allow your lady to make the best choice for her. Again another excellent idea from F360-6 - maybe with one additional (but crucial) adder: let your lady decide. Again, it may not be what you prefer but if your lady isn't comfortable with the way the gun feels in her grip or doesn't like the way it shoots, she's not going to practice with it - so make sure the decision to buy is based on her being comfortable with the gun.
And I may take a little heat for this next suggestion but I personally think the investment in a laser may be the most important thing you can do for your lady. If your lady hasn't or doesn't practice often enough to stay really (and I mean *really*) current and familiar with her weapon of choice, then the speed with which a bad situation can 'turn south' and put her life in danger is amazingly fast. Some will say a laser is an unnecessray expense - I obviously don't agree with that. Additionally, the price of lasers has come down (due to increased manufacturing competition) and so, one can be had now for a very reasonable price. In a true emergency, I have the belief that a first, well placed hit is critical to ending the attack. (There are a lot of those videos posted on You Tube also, for instance search: hotel clerk shoots).
And speaking of You Tube videos, yeah, that video (girl with .50 cal) and several others like it first drew my laughter too. But the more I watched those kinds of videos, the more I questioned what kind of guy would put someone (especially someone he supposedly cares about), in such a dangerous situation as that? My sense of humor with regard to those videos very quickly left me. It's not funny; it's dangerous and totally uncalled for. On one video, one girl is lucky she didn't kill those standing around when she was firing an AR (apparently, fully automatic) for the first time and several rounds left the weapon when she wasn't in control anymore! Can you imagine someone who has a license for a 'machine gun' not having enough sense to properly train a complete novice shooter? And another video similar, where the girl is shooting one round and pulls the trigger and fires two rounds in quick succession. Do these 'boyfriends' not think to only put ONE round in the chamber for a first time shooter (especially of, big hard to control calibers for women)? Just amazing (...and pretty discouraging).
my firearms so far:
-Springfield XD .40 S&W 3lb trigger, tungsten guide rod and stiffer spring, tungstun ambi mag release. It's a tack driver and my pride and joy.

My wife has hi jacked my .45 sub compact. She didn't care for it the first two rounds... and now I can get it back from her. But she's getting pretty good, and to be honest she looks pretty darn hot with it on her hip.... 8 )
Think I might try to go and pop a coyote or hog tomorrow.... I love shootin stuff!!!
