I think you're right on! I see the issue being about mental health, more than it is about access to guns. I was having a discussion with my neighbor about assault riffles and he said there is no need for the public to have access to them. My response to that was" If some people where in your house trying to rob you, would you prefer to have a revolver or an assault riffle?". 57% support gun control right now, 6 months from now, it will be back down below 40%. NRA is too powerful to let to much happen.
