I need a friend like that.

Well I was wondering I would rather go through a dealer than the fire arms store. Been thinking about getting a 1911

Anyone with manufacture preferences for the 1911?

What are you looking for in a 1911? For CCW I'm guessing you're looking at a commander or officer size, probably in a lightweight model? What price range are you looking in?

I'm not a huge fan of Kimber. They seem a little pricey for what you get, but with a little love and care can be nice pistols. I also don't really like the commander sized pistols that only have a 4" barrel. Springfield is a nice option for the price point if you don't mind a foreign made model. Colt is nice and it's hard to argue with the name brand. Just keep an eye on the pricing so you don't pay too much.

Smith & Wesson makes a nice lightweight commander sized pistol. For concealed carry, I like a bobtail on a full size grip so I did that to mine. Of course now you can buy a Smith E series with a bobtail done from the factory.

Of course we can't really talk about 1911's in a Texas gun thread without bringing up STI, that little company in Georgetown. STI makes some great 1911's. I've never been a fan any 1911 smaller than a commander, but I did have a little STI Escort follow me home one day.

I feel much safer now that I know EVERY man in Texas has a small arsenal in his cupboard - mine included. I don't dare even try to list what we have.

BUT, I can list mine - I just bought myself a S&W Bodyguard 38 spc. 5 shot with a laser. Nice compact little gun that fits in a purse. No hammer so you can't get that caught on anything. Nifty little protector.
