E40D Woes

working on a 97 7.3 E4OD for a friend and have run into a problem.. he brought it to me telling me it had lower power then usual (this truck already needed help before hand) and that it was at a dead crawl. I though maybe his fuel pump had finally bit the dust as it was already kinda on the weak side, so i ran a gauge on it and got back 55 psi at idle and about 60-70psi at 2k in neutral, so i figured that was about on par with how the truck was usually running, so we took it for a drive and it fails to move at anything but a dead crawl unless i manually pull it into second then it will move down the road at decent rate till 30 then i have to pull it into drive to which it will then immediately drop to the lowest gear, overdrive i think? and drop to 600rpm and slowly work its way up to 60+ with out dropping gears, im starting to think the transmission has finally hit the bucket but what has gone out? the od light is not blinking pressing the od button does nothing, there are no check engine lights and unfortunately my AE is 140 miles away and i can't scan for codes. anybody have a clue as to what might be out?
