Good information, I keep learning. You gonna buy that set on eBay? You need a different style for each truck.
They have a couple of things going against them. Price. They are painted white which could be corrected. And at least one reads Ford which is a tough one to change. I suspect they both are. Otherwise...I really don't need them. I'm getting close to making a second one from parts, plus some spare pieces.
Here's the non-telescoping 5" x 5" mirrors for door slot installation. One missing its brace and one was missing its bracket but the mirrors that came on my one truck had the brackets so I can use one of them. Just need to paint it gray to match. I don't think NumberDummy mentioned these in any of his posts but they are sort of a cool looking option. Not something you see every day.
well... ive been talked into it lol i wanna get some new side mirriors for my truck i dont like the original cause there so small... but does anyone kno were i can find some nice chrome side mirriors that are suitable some nice sizeable mirriors about 4-6in in diameter. those huge ones are kinda throwin off its old age look.
Just FYI - The guy you are replying to hasn't logged on here since the year 2015 so hopefully he is all set, but those are some aftermarket mirrors you've located there for sure. Nice find.
The real cat's meow is the FoMoCo swing-lok mirrors, but they are very hard to find.
Another option not mentioned much is the non-telescoping 5" x 5" square (ish) mirrors. Here's a picture of Mom sitting on the back of Dads 1954 F100. You can see the mirror on the passengers door. This is similar to the type.
Here's my Grandads 1957 with him in the background near the tent. He has the same mirrors and appear to be painted black. Could these be telescoping? Hard to tell for sure.
Here's both trucks in the same picture. Same mirrors and look to be painted black on Dads truck, too.
TA455, cool pictures of your Dad's and Grandpa's trucks. Do you still have either of these trucks? I have my Grandpa's 54 F-100 that he bought new.
I usually hang out on the 48-56 forum. There some of the guys call me the "mirror guy", LOL. I guess because I dislike the little reproduction chrome round mirrors that repop places sell as "stock" that you can't see much with them. They were never on the 53-55 trucks. There is some debate they were put on later 56 trucks. I have not found them in any Ford truck literature until the 1957 Dealer catalog. The 53-56 square mirrors measured 6" x 6". I have found that the similar mirrors on the 57 and up trucks were smaller at 5x5 inches. The 53-56 ,irrors were black. The 57 and up mirrors were ivory.
The original mirrors on my '54 before I fixed up and painted it. The mirror arms were rusted and the passenger side was bent. I don't know if Grandpa bent it on purpose to see better behind him or if he or my uncle hit something and bent it. I did not know that originally the upper part was stainless or chrome and that the big bolt and washer were stainless and originally shiny.
My 54 and 55 with the stock mirrors and extendable mirror arms:
I shortened the mirror arms I put on my 54 to match the arms as they were when Grandpa had the truck. I sawed off the bottom of the black tube.
NOS mirrors. Notice the 53-55 mirror door brackets had holes that were in a line. The 56 mirror door bracket holes were diagonal. 53 mirror
56 mirror
An exploded mirror diagram for stock 53-56 mirror and arm:
PS: Since the stainless bolt and washer and the black parts that clamp unto the arm are the same and the part that goes into the door are similar, if any one has any of those I'd be interested in buying them for a reasonable price. I'd be interested in the arms if they are in decent shape. Yes, I would be interested in the mirrors even though they are smaller than the 53-56 mirrors, even if the glass is broken.
I just got my 64 f250 and now I need to learn from the info you have all posted. Mine still has the original plugs in the doors. The original paint is on the truck so I will leave the plugs. First I have to find 8 lug wheels to replace the 2 piece steel wheels with the old retaining rings.
How about using handlebars from a bicycle? They should be great tubing for mounting the mirrors. Just cut as needed and flatten the ends. Drill the holes for the mirror and bracket.
I had somebody stop and wanted to buy my 64 but I didn't know what to say. If he doesn't come back with a decent offer, I will mount the mirrors using old bicycle handlebars as mentioned. I see them out on the curbs for trash a lot. I found the mirrors at Discount auto parts.
There are 4 different types of mirrors pictured, but more than 4 part numbers.
