Dassler, these would not have been Original Equipment, since they are not Fomoco. I am the third owner, these were put on by original owner when he installed a camper shell similar to the one now on it for hauling his jon boat on top . That extra tall shell was almost destroyed when a redwood branch in the second owners (my neighbor) front yard fell on it, so I kicked it off at the dump and found a different one. Mirrors are period-correct aftermarket, but look fine to me.

I understand that they are period correct aftermarket, however, I could probably not tell, without assistance, the difference from the FoMoCo ones, at least not at first glance. My main point, was to congratulate on a truly awesome looking ride, and it is always good when folks have the good fortune to do what they want and have the luck to find something, even aftermarket, that takes their project to the next level or at least another step in the direction of what one wants. Again, thanks for sharing. I personally would love to find a set of the slot mirrors that are rectangle. I have seen some what I believe to be ordinal on a few trucks folks have posted, and seen what was a tasteful conversion by someone in this or another mirror thread, but right now I am sitting in Germany, my '66 is sitting in Virginia, and I am only looking for a way to be reunited at the moment and all the other things have to wait.

I had an idea to take a stock Slick mirror arm, and attach a mirror from a bumpside (67-72) to it. The idea is only in theory at the moment, as I have no idea what size the shaft on the bumpside mirror is. It may need more modification to make it work. This is only a quick photoshop of what it would look like. I don't think it looks too shabby.

Better vision from a rectangular mirror

That’s a nice looking concept. I’ll have to look at mine and see what kind of mirror will fit.

Overall, this is a great idea, and if you find a suitable mirror, please let us know what you do. While I would like to go original on my '66 camper special, I like the overall look of the small round mirrors a previous owner added. However, they are somewhat useless...or at least less than ideal.

Will definitely do. I honestly like the looks of the entire bumpside mirror being installed on these slicks (like in this photo, not my truck), but it requires screwing the base directly to the metal of the door. Not a huge deal, just not personally a big of doing that. It definitely gives it a more period-correct kind of look though.
The position you put it in, you are also kind of stuck with too, unlike using the arm of the originals, which gives you a little more control of its position.

That is a good looking truck, and your right, the mirrors, while not an exact original, do look appropriate to the style of the truck if you are not a purist. I'm not... I do appreciate a pure restoration, there is nothing like a correct restoration of any vehicle to help the next generation know what was what, and to have a reference point for originality, but my truck has already been taken from original by a previous owner, and while the mods are subtle, I'm not sure I would ever be able to get the correct parts to put her back into original status. Thanks for sharing and keep us posted on how your mirror mods go.
