we had a snow storm here last weekend, there was a nice snow drift i assumed wasn't that deep.boy was i wrong, the snow was about 6" above the wheel well openings.had to crawl out the window as the doors wouldn't open being half buried.it was the first time i was ever stuck in ol big red,ran to the house to get my 85 4x4 and battery was dead and my jumper cables were in big red.finally got the 85 running and while pulling big red out i lost my power steering belt.well to make a long story short i got big red out and got my 85 into the garage to get repaired as soon as it warms up a little and big red is in the driveway froze up,my block heater craped out and that 460 doesn't like the cold any thing under-15c or 5 f and it won't start,it's been close to -40 here last week.funny how the 302 and the 300I6 will fire right up but that 460 will barely turn over.
actually i'm thinking it's my starter, when the engine is hot it cranks slowly as well. i have an 2 optima battery's and i'm not impressed with them, one sat in my 86 fully charged for 4 months and it won't hold a charge and the other is in my quad whit i use quit frequently and the same,i'll never buy another one.my lead acid battery's last a lot longer and both of these optima's are less that 2 years old.
Yep. I just recently replaced my motorhome's starter I thought I just had a bad ground, or the motor was slightly seized (if there is such a thing) cause it would turn over excruciatingly slow, most of the time, a little of the time she would fire right up, then it dawned on me that maybe the starter was to blame, swapped her out with a new one from oreilley's and slam-bam talk about an energetic start. I twas like the old beast just woke up with her guns blazing.
I had a thread a while ago about my f150 seeming to over-wind when she started, like the starter had too much juice and it was like it was going to take off like a top. Well when I was changing out my clutch, I had to remove the starter and well, it seems as though it is the same starter as the 460 in the Motorhome. (Lil o'l 302 with a big @$$ starter).
Didn't think it was negative, just thought my starter was working too hard on the 302, when it is probably just the low compression I have on the 302. They may not be the same starter, Sure seem the same size though....
I get about 7.5 Mpg in the old MH, doesn't matter how much crap i load in her, she does the same with the wife, two sister-in-laws and two nieces and their stuff, or nothing at all.
