Lisa, I don't think it would hurt to call the first place to see what they are thinking.

Tristan, calling everyday would be annoying, I probably would have said the same thing.
A follow up call almost a week after an interview shouldn't be bothersome though.

On a similar note, I called and scheduled my orientation for the company I worked for last summer. It isn't the job I want, but it is a job. I'm going Monday to fill out applications at 6-8 places. I also called my most recent employer, they have nothing. I was told there is work out there, they just aren't getting any of it.

That's a lot different than working hard and not enjoying what you are doing. Days seem to drag on forever.

In general Mike, is it pretty slow in your area for all kinds of employment right now?

employers want good people, if the first company was interested at all and has you and a few other people on their list for 2nd interview they might like the fact you are a person who is wanted other places. They don't want to miss out on a good employee and a call might get the 2nd interview a little quicker.

I know when I'm looking for people I'm looking for the best people I can find.

Good luck with your decision, Lisa!

Dammit. You guys aren't making this any easier.

Good point...but the bossman/decision maker left on vacation right after we interviewed on Friday. I don't even think he's back yet.

I'm dying here you guys. If he were sitting in his office..I'd call him and let him know what's up...most definitely.

Let me break it down:

Job #1 is a Marketing Assistant/Coordinator for a very large non-for-profit here in Cedar Rapids. GREAT job. FUN office. FULL benefits. Some travel to some cool places. Half days on Fridays. Good vacation time. This is the one I do not know about and might not know until April 1st. Boss is on vacation.

I would actually be making a difference in the community which was a big plus for me too. Doing some volunteer work from time to time
This one had good salary too comparable to what I left behind in Denver. Office is just down the street from the house.

Job #2 - the one that called and offered me the job today - is an Office Manager for a very small landscaping company down in Iowa City. Relaxed atmosphere..easy job...I'd be running the back end of the business so the guy who started the company could be out in the field. I liked the guys there, I meshed with them well. No benefits. Pay is abysmal at $8.50 an hour! Job is in Iowa City which is about 40 minutes away. Owner claimed he would do his best to pay me what I'm worth once I started and proved I could help the company make money. These guys are honest hard working people...I can't take this job and then leave them in two weeks. Its not fair to them I refuse to do that to these guys. They already hired someone last week and bought her a new desk and stuff and then she never showed up.

Obviously #1 is the superior position. #2 would be something I'd do because I have been sitting on my *** for three months. If I take #2 I risk missing out on #1. If I refuse #2 and do not get an offer from #1...I risk sitting on my *** for a lot longer.

Yeah, I think so. I haven't done much searching around though. There is typically only one page for employment opportunities in the local paper now, where as a year ago there would be 2-3 pages. Road construction will be picking up again shortly, after the ground thaws, and is most likely where I'll end up

I'd so pass on the 2nd job, unless there is no other income coming into the household.

then I would take it and keep looking until better job opens up.

That is a very tough decision, but I'd probably hold out for job#1. It is a risk, but it sounds like one that is worth taking.

I wouldnt know what to do honestly. I would tell you to hold out for the 1st because you would enjoy it a lot more and it pays better. I would explain the situation to #2 and see if they will work with you if you didnt get the #1 job. If they say they wont then you definitely know you will be waiting for #1! I wouldnt screw them over like the other person did. It takes money to try filling a position, and a small company like that it might be harder to come by!

Lisa --> CALL THEM! Give them a chance!! When I had two potential positions, I had to go to "Job #1" and tell them what was going on, since I didn't want to do exactly what you said to "Job #2". I don't see anything wrong with that at all, and neither should they. In my case, it was a full-time position out at my guard unit, and there were VERY competitive people looking for that spot. Actually, the guy that got it is very good, but an outsider. I was one of a couple very strong current unit members that was a bit miffed when we found out who got it. It all worked out in the end for us, and we're over being "miffed", but it was a surprise.

The thing was that they couldn't tell me the decision before a certain date (I *love* red tape!), and I had to know before that. Fortunately I cornered the Chief in his office, and at least got something from him. He said "If I were you, I'd take the other job". For me, that was 'nuff said, and here I am... LOL

Sorry, that was longer than I meant...

EDIT: BTW, that cartoon is hysterical, Lisa!!!

Lisa... given this time of year and the type of business that #2 is associated with, they are going to be getting busier and busier. I'd do either "A" or "B"....

"A"
Do what Joe said and call #1 and be patient... April is only 3-1/2 weeks away.

OR.....

"B"
Another way you might want to try skinning this cat is by being up front with the owner of #1 and agreeing to make it a 4-week trial for both of you. If they can't or won't cough up what you're worth after 4 weeks, you have the right to walk away, and you both get a full 4 weeks to decide on each other. That would get you "off your a**" for the next 4 weeks, still be able to take #1 if it becomes a reality, or remain gainfully employed at #2 if #1 doesn't work out.

In today's economy, the owner of #2 surely can't hold it against you if #1 becomes a viable option, especially if you've both agreed to a trial period. He also gets to decide whether or not you'll be worth putting up with.

Good afternoone everyone! Not much going on here today, just putzing around the house, picking up after the kids, doing laundry, working in the back yard and playing with the kids!

Lisa, I wish I had some advice for you but the guys have pretty much covered everything already.

Lisa, what is the possibility of telling them(2nd) about the other job(1st)? I mean, let them know up front about it and that you are interested in that one more for benefits. Kinda like you will be just helping them out for a couple of weeks just in case they call you for it. That way if they agree, you have let them know about it,but then again, they may not want you also. Its worth a shot if your kinda afraid of missing out on the 1st job,and still giving the 2nd one a chance.
I hadn't read Pete's post yet,but its basically meaning the same thing
