Did any one read the article in the new Diesel Power magazine that tested the 6.4 and the v10. They showed a hwy MPG over 19 and combined was in the 15-16 range. They had an extra cab with the 3.73 rear-end so these trucks should get near the 6.0 in MPG. Oh by the way it beat the v10 in every test situation (Duh) and it almost doubled it in fuel mileage....
Food for thought!!
Hummm. This months issue of trailer life tested the F-350SD 6.4L 4:30 diff towing a 5th wheel at 11,380 lbs,,Towing 8.4 solo 14.6..Who to believe?????
I hope that I am not off topic with this post. I’ve been a member her for a couple of years. I‘ve never owned a diesel before. I will be retiring in a couple of years and my plans have been to purchase a 15-16K fifth wheel and a truck to pull it with. I have been reading and trying to learn everything I can about diesels before purchasing one. I have appreciated everyone’s input and your experience with your trucks. My plan has been to purchase a 2010 truck at the end of 09 and was really hoping that the 6.4 would be a bigger winner for Ford. I have been buying Fords for the past 20 years. I’ve owned a Ranger, F150, and Explorer (Eddie Bauer) which I am still driving. Part of my decision in purchasing a 5th wheel and a truck VS a motor home is fuel mileage, but with the mileage the 6.4 is getting I’m not sure now that I would be better off getting the truck trailer combo VS MH. I am hoping that they can come up with a solution for the mpg issue. Maybe it is just me, but 6-8 mpg towing is not that good for a truck. I was kind of hoping for about 10-11 mpg towing. Is that unrealistic? I’m also concerned about the truck going into half power going up an incline that some are experiencing. I am pulling for the 6.4 to be a good truck, because I want one and need one. Did I read on here where they are going to change engines again in 2010? Again, I am still learning and trying to make my decision. Thanks!
Guy's, I don't care what engine you have, but if you get a DRW with 4.30 gears it WILL NOT get the same milage as a SRW with 3.73's. Aint gonna happen. Even the 7.3 DRW guys don't get much over 14 mpg empty. If you have to get the best mpg, buy the smallest 6 spd, 2 wheel drive, srw truck you can and buy a smaller trailor.

I under stand your concern, and as of right now this new "'08 emissions" stuff seems flawed, but about the time you plan on getting a truck they should have most of the problems worked out. Also the DPF is here to stay, its the only way to meet emmisions requirements(right now) and the regen modes\de-powering is gonna be a problem for all trucks that have to go into a regen, lets just hope that they figure out a way for the truck to go into regen with little power loss as possible. As far as the "mpg issue" I cant really complain about that cause what do you expect when their is basically an extra injector that feeds fuel to the DPF.
One other thought by 2010 Ford will most likely stop using Internationals engines and they will have their own ready. So it may be a while before Ford has everything smoothed out.
And 2010 is when the next round of emissions requirements go into effect, so there will be even more junk installed on these trucks. I agree with getting a 2009 model unless you want to wait for the new engine and exhaust system to work itself out.

There is not an extra injector feeding fuel to the DPF. And I expect that when the truck is working hard that fuel assisted regenerations would be infrequent.

You sure are right!!!!! I originally believed in the myth that all diesels got 18 mty and 12 towing, that is what a lot of fellow campers told me. Now that I own a 450 with 4.30's. I now understand your statement. There is so much good info on FTE, sure with I knew about it years ago and followed its posts.

"basically"......um... that was the key word in my post, who knows maybe everyone is just makeing up all this regen=low power while towing, maybe people are scared and just assume the truck will stop going up a pass if this happens when towing....heh I have a '02 so I am not worried and will not dive any deeper then "just thoughts" on this subject .
My dad has a friend with one, and is getting 17-19mpg hwy.
Well good for your Dad's Friend , what are the exact specs on his truck? Why do I ask? well for all I know he could have a shortbed reg cab 2wd and been giving milage for coasting down hill .
Just a Note: I just picked up my truck ( 2008 F350 6.4 Diesel DRW 4X4 4.30 Gears) took it in for a lower reservoir leek ( did not know this new truck had two coolant reservoirs one for the turbos and one for the motor ) Anyway back to the MPG subject. I asked them while they had it to do a complete diagnostics on the truck because I thought the motor should have more power and the Fuel Milage is around 9 MPG.
The head Diesel Mechanic drove the truck for 26 miles with all the computer dignostics hooked up to it and he told me everything was running normal. He then told me that Ford is aware of the low MPG this new motor is getting and they are working on a computer upgrade to get better MGP and he will let me know when it is available. I hope this is true
