Took a trip to San Anotnio last weekend, bout 250 miles one way.
My 08' F-350, 4x4, DRW, w/ 6-speed got 17.5 mpg going 70 mph, computer said 17.8. So far I've got 4200 miles on it, and no problems.
You guys really got it bad , I never said anything bad about the truck, and have said in many posts that I still think ford has the best truck, just a poor diesel engine, and they must have some reason to be ending there relationship with navistar. because the 6.4 will only be around for 2 years then another new engine. as far as what any of my friends drive kw thats there choice, I could care less if they ask I would give my opinion otherwise its up to them. And I know of at least 20 contractors like myself who have the 6.4 some are friends some just guys I know the point is most love there new trucks all use them for work and want good mpgs, cause it comes out of there bottom line. none of the guys I have talked to are getting any mpgs out of the new engine. It seems kind of funny that when anyone says anything bad about the 6.4 all of regulars here jump all over us. call us names and even the admin. takes his shots, even though he had a buyback 6.0 . so is this a site where people can find info about there trucks or a FORD feel good site, with most of the posts coming from ford employees, or paid posters to keep sales up for the 6.4
God, I wish I could get some decent mileage out of this 6.4. I can get 14.5 if I baby it empty, but just pulling a small trailer with a quad on it today from Colorado Springs to Albuquerque, I got 6.2. I only got 5 pulling my 41' 5th wheel from Phoenix to Albuquerque a month ago. I miss my 6.0
No name calling just calling it the way I see it. You have and will take any shot you can at the 6oh…period.
...and please show me where I called you a name..

Your point is well taken and I agree. It seems this new design in any of the Big 3's diesel engine will suffer in the fuel mileage category. I am once again amazed that Ford had the nerve to publicize that the 6.4 would get better MPG than the 6.0 much like they did with the 6.0 and the 7.3!!!!!! The 6.0 was supposed to get 10-15% better fuel mileage than the 7.3 and it doesnt seem to be the case. My 6.0 gets about the same as my friends 7.3 in his and they are both CC Short beds. I think that Ford has a great start to this engine I just don't think that they will stick with Navistar long enough to get their UNBREAKABLE reputation back.......
I might add that I am extremely happy with my 6.0 and the more I learn about the 6.4 the happier I am that I bough when I did. The 6.4 seems very reliable but I would have went with a F450 and know I wouldn't be happy with the fuel mileage that they are getting even though they can pull a small town into the next state.....

You have got to be joking right? Or you have a big black cloud that hangs over your head all the time. I am a GM man at heart except when it come to trucks. After owning Toyotas and several Chevy trucks I was open minded and felt the Ford 99DRW 350 V10 would do better than what the 99 chevy would do. At first I did not like the V10 comparison to the Chevy V8 but after several years of towing, the Ford proved its self. That is why I bought a new 450 6.4 because I feel it is the best choice for me. (this is from another post)In my opinion I think part of the problem is we are reading the comparison of oranges to apples. Some comparisons are being made by example an older Ford, Dodge, Chevy that is a 6,000# regular cab with 3.73’s getting an average of 16-17mpg. A lot of feed back on FTE has been on the new 6.4s that are 350 and 450 crew cabs with 4.30s and 4.88s. This is new territory for a lot of us. My 450 get 16 mpg at 60 mph and only 12 mpg at 65mph because it is running 2100 rpms. The 450’s with 4.88s are getting only about 9 at over 65mph. So to sum it up: it is the extra 2700# the 450’s are hauling around and the lower gears, running higher rpms are dragging down mileage not necessarily the new 6.4.
Returned from Ky, with a stop in Smokey Mtn National Park, and got 15.6 mpg on I-75 running @ 80 mph with no load. When I was doing 72 on cruise I was getting almost 18 mpg!!! I am very happy with my 250 4X4 and am not sure why people complain about them, but to each their own.
The 6.4 seems very reliable but I would have went with a F450 and know I wouldn't be happy with the fuel mileage that they are getting even though they can pull a small town into the next state.....
I wish I'd been as lucky as you and kept my 6.0 or bought an '07 with a 6.0 now that I've got the '08 6.4. But you are wrong about the power to "pull a small town into the next state". On Raton pass New Mexico, with a 41' 5th wheel, the 6.0 never knew it was on a hill. I could hold 75 mph and get 11 mpg. My new 6.4 drops until it falls out of cruise and then makes it to the top at 45 mph at 5 mpg. I also cannot pass anyone with a load. There's no passing gear. With the 6.0, if I floored it, it would down shift and take off like a scalded cat. The 6.4 doesn't down shift and just slowly builds speed. You can't pass anything like that. You can see why I keep saying, I miss my 6.0. I'm not sure what the solution will be (if any). Maybe Ford will come out with new progaraming? I'd love to chip this thing, but Ford instists they can tell if you do and it will void my warranty.
ironbrow: I wonder if your truck has something wrong with it. I would assume that they should out pull the 6.0 given the torque ratings that they are advertising. Like others are posting they pull very well. I might have missed it but I'm not sure if you have 3.73 or lower gears (higher #). I haven't heard any complaints about the power on the 6.4's other than your concerns. I have heard numerous complaints about the fuel mileage and a neighbor has one that he traded a 2006 6.0 for and the 6.4 gets 2-3 mpg less than the 6.0 and they are they were the same configuration CC short bed F250. The local tech (good friend) is telling me that they have yet to see one in for repair other than the re flash that was a recall.
Enorma,
Thanks for the reply and the ray of hope. I'll take it in to Ford and see what they say. Was the re-flash on the 4.6 '08? I only have 3000 miles on mine. Does it already have the re-flash?
Yes it was to prevent the engine from going into regen if there was a leaking fuel injector or other problems. I don't believe that it was related to performance in any way. It was a safety reflash....
