FORD: 2007-2008 Expedition
This article supersedes TSB 07-25-5 to update the Service Procedure.
ISSUE:
Some 2007-2008 Expedition vehicles may exhibit a hesitation upon tip-in after braking to a stop and/or a bump while braking to a stop below 10 MPH (16 Km/h). This TSB fixes the bump while braking to a stop and reduces the incidence of tip-in hesitation when accelerating from a stop.
Some 2008 Expedition vehicles built before 12/3/2007 may exhibit a bump feeling while braking to a stop below 10 MPH (16 Km/h). This TSB fixes the bump while braking to a stop issue.
ACTION:
Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.
NOTE: SOME TIP-IN HESITATION IS NORMAL ON THIS TRANSMISSION IN ORDER TO PROVIDE SMOOTH OPERATION. THIS CALIBRATION UPDATE WILL HELP TO IMPROVE THIS CONDITION ON 2007 VEHICLES. 2008 VEHICLES ALREADY HAVE THIS FEATURE INCORPORATED.
NOTE: THE HARSH BUMP WHILE BRAKING TO A STOP WILL BE ELIMINATED. SEVERAL DAYS OF DRIVING IS REQUIRED FOR THE TRANSMISSION TO FULLY ADAPT.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
NOTE: DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REPLACE THE MECHATRONIC UNIT. MECHATRONIC REPAIR/REPLACEMENT IS NOT AUTHORIZED FOR THIS ISSUE.
Vehicles referenced in this TSB are equipped with a PCM and TCM, and require a coordinated flash. This coordinated flash procedure must be followed exactly as outlined by the IDS. Failure to follow the key cycle procedure without waiting for the IDS prompts, will cause the coordinated flash to fail. The PCM will be updated but the TCM will not be updated and the new files will not be installed. It is critical to follow the IDS prompts to ensure a proper repair.
Install IDS/PDS or equivalent and ID the vehicle.
Update the PCM/TCM calibration using IDS release 51.8 and higher or 52.1 and higher. This new calibration is not included in the VCM 2007.11 DVD. Calibration files may also be obtained at MOTORCRAFT PARTS FOR FORD, LINCOLN OR MERCURY VEHICLES. Since the TCM cannot be independently reprogrammed, reprogram the PCM to ensure that engine and transmission calibrations are updated to the latest level simultaneously.
Clear TCM keep alive memory (KAM) and adaptive tables.
Using IDS:
Open Toolbox.
Choose Powertrain.
Choose Reset KAM.
Then Choose TCM.
Using PDS:
Choose all Tests and Calibrations.
Scroll down the menu and choose reset TCM KAM.
NOTE: FOR PDS, RESET TCM KAM IS NOT THE SAME AS CLEAR TRANSMISSION ADAPTIVE TABLES, WHICH IS UNDER THE POWERTRAIN - TRANSMISSION MENU TREE.
NOTE: UNHOOKING THE BATTERY WILL NOT CLEAR THE TCM KAM.
NOTE: DO NOT CLEAR THE PCM KAM.
Verify that the transmission fluid temperature (TFT) PID is above 175 °F (80 °C). If it is not at 175 °F (80 °C), drive unit approximately 3 miles (5 Km) to reach temperature.
NOTE: TFT MUST BE AT 175 °F (80 °C) OR ABOVE BEFORE PROCEEDING TO STEP 5.
Drive unit to perform adaptive shift strategy learn:
Accelerate from rest with light throttle to 15 MPH (24 Km/h), remove foot from accelerator pedal.
Brake very gently to a complete stop (allow at least six (6) seconds).
Repeat Steps (a-b) a total of five (5) times in the dealership parking lot or similar setting.
Accelerate from rest with light throttle ensuring that the 1-2, 2-3 and 3-4 shifts occur at engine speeds between 1300-1800 RPM.
Continue to accelerate until you achieve 50 MPH (80 Km/h) or the 5-6 upshift.
Brake gently to a complete stop and hold foot on brake for at least 10 seconds.
Repeat steps (e-f) three (3) times.
I was having the same issues that most are having, but it really acted up when I was pulling a trailer for 200 miles, fortunately I was able to make it home. Basically I had all the programming issues fixed for the most part, but my 07 had some type of valve that was sticking inside the transmission which was causing the fan clutch to not disengage, in turn telling the transmission it was overheating and rev limiting the engine out. I was having quite a few issues with the transmission and fortunately most of the problems left codes, so it was more easily diagnosed, with the exception of the valve. Obviously the valve had been sticking since I had purchased the truck, because it was doing exactly the same thing since I had purchased it and the service departments did not listen to my concerns. Fortunately it is running good now. Only time will tell if it was actually fixed.

Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
I don't know if I should bother doing anything with it, I am half way through my lease and I don't want to flash it to find out it is worse or that I have poor mileage. I sure hope they solve this or get a different transmission in 09 and beyond..
I now have 10,750 miles on my 07 and the transmission still starts out in second gear about 50% of the time. I have just learned to live with it. But no other problems (yet).
I bought a Ford 7 year or 48,000 mile covers everything extended warranty for it $1280.00.
Looks like I will be using it for a transmission repair in the future, if they are still in business at that time.
The 'Fix' the dealership service dept performed back in July has thus far solved the problem.
