I'm Frank from Kansas City, MO. I picked up a 79 F-250 XLT Supercab 4x4 longbed not long ago and found this site looking for some info. I'm trying to find a cummins to replace the 400 it came with. Do you guys know of any cummins for sale around here? Everything I'm finding on CL seems to be a little too much money. It's not urgent that I find one yet but, I would like to find one soon. I'm going to do a frame up restoration and make this my daily driver so I want the diesel. Any suggestions?
Personally, for ease of swapping them, I would try to find an IDI 6.9 or 7.3L non turbo set up. They're cheaper too. You won't touch a 5.9L Cummins for under $2K.
Welcome aboard Station29. Our fearless chapter leader is from your neck of the woods but old Terry has been pretty busy with work a lot lately. Maybe he'll check in one of these days.
Well howdy "Frank from Kansas City, MO", and welcome to the FTE Missouri chapter.
You best bet might be finding a complete wrecked diesel truck and not just a moter, that way you have all the parts, intercooler, trans ect...get what you need and part out or scrap the rest after the swap.
Remember you will need to drastically change the main frame eng cross member. There are a # of threads covering this swap in the 73-79 forums.
Once again welcome to the club, or nut house depends what day of the week it is. lol
You've got another noob from the St Louis area on the hook
After taking about a 20 year brake to raise kids, I've found myself with another vintage F100. This one is a '65 that is working on about an eight year old body off restoration. I picked her up down in Texas and drove her back. She's been well taken care of and is a really solid old truck.
Like everybody, I've got lots of plans for her. Thankfully most everything I wanted in a another F100 has been done already. Oh, and she's a driver. I'm not sure I could own a trailer only vehicle.
