My "on topic" remark was more geared toward my post than the rest of you guys. I really couldn't care less how many directions a thread takes. Some of the most useful info comes from tangets to the original topic, IMO. I thought the original question was about gears on our trucks so I just inserted that comment in my post in case one of the "thread hijack police" that are so prevelant on other message boards/forums were around.
Thanks again, now I just have to pay attention while I'm poking around the junk yards.
Does anyone know what ratios are available for the '99 E-350 with the V10?
I've got the 3.73LS and looking to change; I towed about 8000# down the Atlantic seaboard last month and want something that tows better while not killing (or maybe improving?) the fuel economy (I averaged 7.5 mpg towing, ~13.5 during a Thanksgiving family trip with people only, no towing). The 3.73 was fine for the T-giving trip, but the primary purpose of this truck is to pull the enclosed racecar trailer; people-carrying is secondary and not nearly as often.
If I have to go aftermarket, anything to avoid?
Recommendations for sources for gears?
Recommendations for a good shop in CT to do the work?
I have the 05 F-350, CC,LB, Dually, V-10, 4:30 diff. I will use the truck for towing a 12.5 maybe 13K fifth wheel camper. I have no brand loyalty at all.I got the Ford because it IS the best truck out there when Ford says SD they mean SD.( my last Tv was a Chevy and it served me well) I got the V-10 because Again IMHO the 6.0 PSd is a dud and time will prove that out.there will be many changes in 07 in terms of Diesel motors and diesel fuel..why buy a motor that will be discontinued. And the most important reason...I did not NEED a Diesel.. My truck is a TV only..I do about 5,000 miles a year Rarely pull steep hills at high altitudes..My cost to operate/maintain per year is much less than the diesel guy who runs 15K a year or more. If my future NEEDS indicate that we need a diesel we will get one..If the cost vs benefits justify one.A lot of folks buy a diesel without doing the proper homework to see if they NEED the motor. If you stop, think, do some homework and determine how and what you will use the motor for. the corrrect choice will jump out at you. My V-10 will pull ANY camper up to 16,300 LBS with ease. By the way... I drive a diesel every day Chevy, International.. great motors (retired and part time school bus and charter driver)
