I know this is really ignorant... But, why is Ford calling these engines "Modular"???
I've been a mechanic of some sort (auto, aircraft, machine equipment, small engine) my whole life. Just dont know what everyones talking about when they use this term.
the ford modular motor is made of castings and parts that interchage with each other or can use parts from one into another.
the base engine is the 4.6 the 5.4 comes from adding stroke to the 4.6. the 6.8 is a 5.4 with 2 cylinders added to the middle of the block, the 5.4 and 6.8 share many part numbers. pistons , rods, rings, valve sizes, bearings and other parts making it modular in design
money is saved by the inchangeability of these parts and castings.
