Unless I'm reading my spec sheets wrong, the 4.30 gear option for 05/06 gives a Dana Super 60 in the front of 4x4 F250/F350 like the F450/F550 normally gets. I think that means a 10" ring gear instead of 9.75" for the 4.10 gears and Dana 60. I don't know if that makes it a 7000lbs rated axle like the F450/F550 with 4.30 gears or a 6000lbs axle like the F250/F350 normally has. Does anyone know if the carrier is different or just the gears?

Ok most you say to go with the 4.30s. However I noticed that some of you are towing "heavy" motorhomes and such.
So Im wondering If i should still go with 4.30s or get the 4.10s. As of now I have no motorhome, only a flat bed, lawn mower equipment, my ford diesel tractor right now is the heavest..Its a TC35D not sure what it weighs right now I need to dig that up..
Do you still recommend the 4.30s, I dont need a barn burner, My intents are to add larger tires though, hopefully without a lift

I don't own a V10. I have test driven a couple of them. The one I drove with the 4.30's really felt very good to me. It did not seem at all like the axle ratio was too low. And if you are going to larger diameter tires, it really becomes a no-brainer, you absolutely want the 4.30 gears.

Good luck,
Brad

Still recommend the 4.30's.

I run LT305's with no lift reducing my 4.30's to 4.03's. With a 4.10 set you would be dreadfully close to the dismal 3.73's, which is what I had on my last truck with the same tires. You want the 4.30's; anything else is expensive to get changed out.

That's what I'm talking about - going to 4.30's gives you something you wouldn't get with a 4.10 or 3.73 - the Super 60 front-end. Just read up on a few things, and supposedly, yes, you get the 10" ring gear with the 4.30's in the front.

I've also read that my rear 3.73 Sterling uses a different diff carrier than the 4.30's. So, I'm stuck either using aftermarket gears to get 4.30, or get a different diff carrier. Not sure if that's true or not.

check my gallerys you can see the difference in the 10.5 ford and the smaller dana 60 front axle. the ford whimps the dana in size. and weighs 2 times as much.

I have two V10 mean machines, one has 215/85/16 tires 30 in tall (stock DRW in 99-00) and the other has 265/75/15 tires 32 in tall stock SRW, both have 4.30 gears. Using a tire calculator the one with 32 in tires makes it a 4.10 final gear when comparing them it to the 30 in tires. And I can really tell the difference in the two.

So whats the difference in MPG between the 3.73 and 4.30's (Stock)
City/Highway...Unloaded...
4.30 has more grunt, but assume it consumes much more gas then the 3.73's.

I know this may not be a big issue with alot of you, but this gearing thing is still very new to me and I just want to make sure I do this right. Im not doubting anyone when they say get the 4.30's. Just want to make sure im understanding this

You don't care about mileage Remember this:

My intents are to add larger tires though, hopefully without a lift
Larger usually means wider and that's a mileage killer. More rolling resistance and the truck sits higher allowing more "dirty" air under the truck. "Dirty" because it's uncontrolled; the bottom of the truck is not smooth.
Between my '99/V10/3.73 and my '03/V10/4.30, each running LT305's, maybe as much as 1 mile per gallon and I'm not really sure about that. I've only checked the '03 once and it was getting about 12 m.p.g. and I drive it like a big block should be driven

Don't assume that

Most here report no more than 1 MPG difference between the two, and the 3.73's are horrible for MPG when towing, you'll get better MPG with the 4.30's "towing heavy".

Here's something that kinda explains the modular's MPG:

I had a '96 t-bird 4.6L that came with 3.27's stock. It got 22-23MPG on the highway usually, once in a while 24, even though the EPA mileage was 25MPG on the sticker.

For 2 years I kept checking the MPG and max got maybe 25 once.

I switched to a 3.73 rear, went from 2000RPM at 70MPH to 2250RPM at 70MPH with the 3.73's.

Gas mileage went UP on the highway all the way to 26MPG with the A/C on!!! Stop-and-go went from 9-10MPG up to 13-14MPG (less throttle needed to accelerate).

And yes, I changed the speedo gear to match the re-gearing

Well Art, I guess we should all stop using the Overdrives on our cars and really save a ton of gas !!!!!!!!!! ???????????????

The T/S won't let me lock out overdrive in the truck but I can leave it in 3rd gear on the highway when I want to get my best mileage.

Uh, a .7:1 O/D (42%) is a lot more than going 14% different in rear gearing...

Went to the dealership tonight, they have given me a real good deal on a Diesel 6.0 ( I know this is the v10 forum just hear me out).
I have between several dealerships taken a diesel out and driven it. I like it, but in someways I think it is way overkill for my use, the noise is something Im sure you get used to...but anyway.. the thing that turned me on to it is the claims of better gas mileage.
Now I have been considering a V10 as I think the 5.4 would be a little underpowered for that size of truck. But everytime I mention a V10 to a sales person they look at me like Im crazy for even thinking about it. The dealer tonight when I said about putting 4.30s in it about hit the floor. He said I would be cutting my fuel mileage in half. Im guessing on average the PSD gets 15 to 16, so that would get 7.5 to 8 MPG!! That sucks even if im not putting larger tires on.
Anyway the V10 speced out with what I wanted came to about 2,000 less than the Diesel and the diesel is loaded to the tilt. Salesmen made me aware that the diesel will be worth quite a bit more when I got rid of it, and the V10 would be very hard to get rid of.
