I am seeing municipal plow trucks with sanders on the back, all V10s.
The V10 is a good choice for business or personal use.
It is a great reliable engine and people who can think outside the box are getting a truck they can feel good about owning.
I've been seeing a lot more V10's around F450/550 dump trucks, F350's, etc.
I saw only ONE F350 V10 3-valver since they came out
our plow guy had 2 with 2 valve motors and the rest psd's in 05 he got rid of all the diesels and early v10's for the new 3 valve and loves the heck out of them as to how cheap they are on up keep. this is 2 nd plow season and only had 2 with any problem. and he openly admits that was driver caused. not a warrenty,
all of them have 4:30's and auto's and run a av. of 8 gph plowing all day long. and boy can those rigs push snow as we had 12 inches yesterday.
Art, I live on Vancouver Island and we only have half a million people and they are spread out out a little thinner than your Long Island but I have finally seen another 3 V V10.
The plant where I do most of my work just got a new 06 F350 V10 for the Security Dept. They had a 99 F450 V10 for the last 6 years and they put about 120000 miles on it and countless idling time and that engine still purrs as sweet as my 05.
Charlie, if the new 4x4 front end is taking the abuse of snow plowing , it is a winner.
NOTHING is as hard on a pickup's front end or transmission than plowing snow, well nothing that a truck was designed for. I know we have people doing some pretty outlandish things with their trucks but they don't count as normal.
don
they sure are. and it's great to sleep while they plow not hear the noise from the diesels.
8 gals of gas a hour pushing snow that is darn good as it's all slow speed heavy work.
the 2 break downs were new drivers pushing to fast. hitting some thing and breaking/bending parts.
with this storm, i found 3 companys around me have gone to the new v10 and all stand behind the choice to use them
Hey eveyone, you havent lost me.. Just got busy yesterday plowing and today had to work all day, home for a little bit before heading back to work. Lots of good posts here and hopefully tomorrow I can check back in and ask some questions when i have more time...IF you dont mind..
Thanks for all the comments and feelings on the matter
By the way, I've seen very few work trucks from the "other" manufacturers. Everything is Ford around here... I mean F450/550 or 350's with plows/dump bodies, etc.
i just saw a family member today that was a psd 7.3 nut. he got him self a 06 f350 sc.swb, v10 , manual 4x4, 4:30's ls lariat. with a new western 9 foot blade. plowed all day yesterday and came up to plow his yard near me. i can't beleive how this smoker nut loves this v10.

Art, even an old millwright like me knows the answer to that one.
Fords are real trucks, not a Buick with a box or a Junk can Dodge.
wait a min. don! dodge did make a good truck at one time. it was real big , had a flathead six or a early hemi and was called a powerwagen. the 1st one from the late 40's to mid 50's. after that truck they died,
Wrench- you really a millwright? That's what my father-in-law did for 38 years.
Hi Polar Bear. I have a Canadian Interprovincial Certificate that says I am a millwright but I'll never know everything about this trade and I never stop learning. Millwrighting covers so many things and some guys are more experienced in some areas than other guys. It is a challanging occupation and I really enjoy it but at 55 I have to use my brains more and my back less.
I try to rig anything over 75 pounds and my back is still in good shape (touch wood) I feel sorry for the automotive and heavy duty mechanics, they work in more awkword positions than I do most of the time. Ask Captchas about his back.
I spend part of my week walking around with a palm pilot , a laser temperature instrument , and a strobe light and enter bearing temperatures on motors , pumps, and gear boxes. The strobe light can be set to freeze moving parts for inspection and after I get my data on the palm pilot I go to a computer room and upload all this information onto a computer so even millwrights uses computers in todays world.
I know you are Salesman and from what I have read, you are a true professional and I have the highest respect for that. I finally found a great Ford salesman myself and I have bought my last 2 trucks from him.
I know I have been less than kind in many of my comments about salespeople but this is a profession that can attract the wrong people.
Just like any job, it takes hard work and integrity to be successful.
In today's world where everything seems to cost me way more than I thought it would, the V10 is an anomaly. It still amazes me that you can buy this engine for just $500 over the stock V8. These people buying trucks for commercial needs crunch the numbers with one thing in mind.....getting reasonable service for less cost and headaches. The V10 certainly fits the bill for reasonable purchase price and it is slowly earning a reputation for reliability. And I am sure the drivers of these V10's give their bosses some positive feedback, too. What would you rather plow snow with?
When the marine research lab I work for bought it's first V10, the guy who drives our equipment all over the place with this truck just pissed and moaned that he didn't get a diesel (He had a Dodge as a personal truck). Now, several years later, he won't let them take this truck away from him. I hear him defending this truck to all comers.
A friend of mine who ran a construction business in Idaho got rid of all his diesels and bought gasers, mostly V10's. He told me the most profitable approach was to buy used V10's, when he could find them, because his workers beat the crap out of the trucks anyway, and the V10's were holding up well.
this motor is like a timex. takes a licken and keeps on ticking. i just can't believe the number of plow trucks around sporting the new v10 emblems since this 12 inch storm here, and the drivers love them.
the guy i spoke with yesterday said the truck had 1k on it 4:30 gears and was useing about 8 gals a hour pushing a 9 foot blade and running in 4x4 low holding the trans down in low.
i bet it gets better as it breaks in. maybe down to 6 gph. low /low is some high rpms to judge a motors fuel useage at.
