I don't understand some folks think there is some clandestine motive behind Ford's actions here. There is no big secret. Ford has published a broadcast message to the dealers with a mfg date widow for this transmission fix.
The dealers are able to chase the VIN to discover if a transmission is included. Just because you or I can't doesn't mean the path does not exist.
It is my understanding that this is not a recall as it only impacts a 4 month mfg window.
Also, it is my understanding that this is not a design defect but a mfg defect as the pin or shaft or whatever they call it for the planetary gear was made a few thousandths under spec. This is why it could back out resulting in catistrophic damage.
Gees...they catch hell for problems and they catch hell for fixes. This is even a proactive fix with a loaner for crying out loud...
I agree with kw5413. There is no conspiracy going on... The aliens aren't trying to abduct your transmission to insert a tracking device or anything like that... The auto industry requires traceability on each and every item that goes into the vehicle from their vendors. The main purpose is for this exact reason, to recall the specific vehicles with a specific problem. In years past, they would have to recall them all and apply the "fix" weather it was required or not. This drives cost up which in turn drives the price of the vehicles up for the consumer. I would have to imagine that in years past, many "fixes" weren't made available because of the cost to identify the vehicles that had the problem. Traceability allows the auto manufacturers to provide the "fix" to only the vehicles for which it applies. Traceability is a total pain in the butt to set up on the vendor's side but I'm glad to see that it appears to be working (I work for a company that has to provide traceability for the auto and medical industries). I'll know more next week when I get my truck back on it's effectiveness. I'll pass on the results.

I have yet to recieve my notice...although through the help of FTE, I know it needs 04B24. I have been driving inferior work vehicles for the past month. I drove my SD to Phx once in the past month so I would feel like a bad A$$ again. LOL.
I am scheduled for repair in March.
Rangers and F150s don't give me the FIX I've become accustomed to.
Not that I am complaining, I will have an 04 Harley Davidson with 10,000 miles on it in 2006!
Catfish,
I have to disagree with you (atleast in my case). I took your advice and rolled my butt under my truck to determine the date code on my transmission. Then I visited the dealer to get an Oasis report to determine if my truck needs the trans fix (and it does). I made an appointment. The very next day, I go to the mailbox and there's a letter from Ford (Detroit) instructing me to go visit my local Ford dealer to get this resolved. Ford is notifying the owners of the defect. My transmission is an early date code and I'll bet they just started the notification process. (they can't possibly service everyone all at once) The dealerships have to be notified of the situation so they can bone up on what needs to be done.
In my case, I'm very impressed so far as I'm the second owner of this truck (I bought it directly from the orginal owner with no involvement from any dealership) and received it in December. Ford notified me directly (February) with a letter addressed to me so they made the effort to track me down.
I believe this web site has given us all alot of insight and Ford can't possibly react at this speed. Let's give Ford a chance to do the right thing. It appears they are trying.

Well let's just have Ford send everyone a letter on the same day. That way every one can call / show up at their respective dealers at the same time. Only to be turned away due to lack of parts. Then we would all have something to ...well..."complain" about.
Or they could not notify anybody until they had plenty of parts...hmmm holding back repairs against a known, fixable problem. Then we would all have something to ...well..."complain" about.
Or Ford could just do nothing. Providing repairs on an as need bassis, thereby, saving hUge warranty $$$. Then we would all have something to ...well..."complain" about.
Or Ford could offer up a measured, timely, parts available response. Notifying CUSTOMERS based on an established criteria. Oooops...that's right...they did that already...and some seem to still have something to ...well..."complain" about.
TO all

to post your VIN # , clink on the general forums link, you will have to register. then post your VIN under the oasis forum. Although this might not be necessary as i received notification in the mail from Ford yesterday!!!
no recall on letter yety on my 3/04 F350 , but on my last camper delivery , the following started happening ....
very bad slipping/high pitched whining going up grade (with a light travel trailer) ...
very harsh downshifts in the tow haul mode ...
also , on tow/haul down shift it burper anti freeze out of the underhood jug ... not nice to see steam come from under the hood going down a mountain and a slipping tranny going up (these were "baby" PA "mountains" not the big western mountains I have been hauling thru )
are these the probs ?
I did blow a heater core/hose at 47,000 miles ..in the shop now determining while I filled my glove box with anti freeze
Just picked up my truck from Captial Ford in Raleigh NC after they did the 04B24 Torqshift Transmission repair. While the transmission was out they replaced the rear main seal on the engine because it was leaking oil. All of it was done under warranty. All in all a painless experience. It really does shift better than before. Ford did the right thing by me. I hope others will have a positive experience as well.

OK ... heater core replaced , along with an electronic mixer that was just a tad bit wet and shorted out .... are heater cores only good for 48,000 miles ? Hope this isn't an every 3 months repair
tranny still acts up though ...I had hoped that the sensors were detecting the heater probs but , nope ....
The tranny downshifts very rudely into 1st gear under tow /haul coming up to a stop around 10 - 15 mph ...a real shock ... I've been kicking the T/H out as I roll to a stop , but that is not a real fix ...
had an Oasis run , and my tranny is not covered under the recall ...it is a 2/04 build ...
any help / ideas on what is causing this ?
The tranny seems to run fine out of T/H , so I think it is a programming or solenoid prob as opposed to a "tranny prob " ...
Mine was fixed last week. They asked to have the truck for two days, because the dealer had a people out sick. Mine is a 04/04 build and svc mgr. indicated that the only trucks that are effected is between early April 04 and mid to Late Jun 04.
Basically what happened was that one of the computerized machine presses at the tranny factor had a wear toleranice problem and caused the unit planetary gear assembly to be pressed in wrong.
They found the problem early and discovered it only pertained to the above units. So NO recall was necessary, although there were varying degrees of failures ranging from 8000 on up.
The original $$$ cost was set at $2200 and it's now up to $4800, depending on degree of failure and/or condition of case. There were some trucks that had the entire tranny replaced because of the serious damage when the gear assemly let go.
Ford didn't try to hide at all. When I called to inquire whether or not I was effected, they basically said, if you received a letter, you're efected. Bring it in at your earliest convienence.
Mine went in the shop today for the trans recall was starting to ship hard out of second gear.Got the recall letter friday called dealer quickly. Now have to drive a escort from the dealer not my F 250. Let you know what the exstent if damage was done in the trany.
