KW I have a customer that works at Town East Ford & is their lead mechanic, If something comes of the tranny thing I might have to pull in a favor. I was also going to ask him to help me get on the website I posted earlier, I think it would be cool to just "listen in" on their conversations.
got the truck back today and no damage, only used the first kit, will look for the magnafine filter, anyone know where they put it? Only took one day, also no longer a TSB, is now a recall.
On my vehicle it is visible behind the right front wheel. There are some steel tranny fluid lines that they cut into, these go to the transmission fluid cooler.
[QUOTE=moebdick]The extra filter kit is part number XC3Z-7B155-AA. This is a full-flow Magnafine-style fitler (possibly the same thing made for Ford) with a magnet for catching the filings.[QUOTE]
Since my truck is an '05 and trans build date is well after March 8, 2004 through June 24, 2004 date range I have only been skimming this trans recall. This extra filter caught my eye though. I imagine it could be installed in any truck if it is just an in-line slice. Is that p/n a Ford number or somewhere else? Any ideas how much something like that would cost? How often it needs replaced? etc... Extra filteration is always good.
Tinytrixie, the filter is part of Repair Kit #2, which is only installed as part of the recall if there's damage. Mine also had no signs of damage, but I just went ahead and bought the filter kit and had them install it on my dime.
BTW, the part# I posted above turns out ot be just the filter itself (or so I was told). The part# for the whole kit ends with -BB, according to my service advisor. The kit includes fittings or brackets or some such(?). Dealer quoted me about $75 for the kit and 1 hr install labor. I'll know for sure once I get the invoice.
Antacus, the filter installs in one of the lines between the trans and the cooler, so yes, you could just get the Magnafine and put it on and get the same results as Ford's filter kit for less $$$. Requires a couple of tubing cuts and flares, I think; nothing major. I think I read somewhere that you put it on the out line if the truck is fairly new, but on the return line if over a certain mileage (due to possible metal filings trapped in cooler, I guess).
Yeah, was reading their site. If under 5k miles before the cooler, after 5k miles after the cooler. Since I am just shy of 2k miles I guess it would go before the cooler.
Wonder how long these last before you have to replace the filter... and how hard the replacement is. My concern is that when i cut the lines to splice this in fluid will leak out. I did not see any reference to spilling fluid on the installation page tho.
The trans tech told me to change the new filter every 30k miles, same as the others. Mine was installed after the cooler, on the return line just before it goes into the bypass filter. The line is rubber where it's installed; probably took 15 minutes max to put it on. After looking at it installed, I wished I woulda just gotten the Magnafine and done it myself. Would have saved myself about $125. Oh well.
Moe, at least you can do it yourself from here on out, I would expect you might have a few changes ahead of you. Is the filter in that little space between the bypass & the radiator? Could you post a pic, it looks like it would be easier to install it right by the transmission. Don't worry about the pic if it is a lot of trouble.
The filter is directly under the the radiator mounting bracket on the passenger side, right where the return line takes a 90 towards the factory bypass. I'll get some pics in the morning and post them here.
I just took my truck in today for some steering issues and the tech entered my VIN into his computer and an OASIS report says the planetary gear needs to be replaced due to the recall. Is there any questions I should ask before and after the work is completed? I'm going on vacation next week and they can't get me in until the following week, I plan on taking my truck and towing a 5000# trailer. Should I be worried? This really sucks, I didn't spend $50k to have in the shop after 8000 miles. This chaps my hide. All day today I kept thinking about it and kept reassuring I purchased the right brand and not those other diesels. Any comment would be helpful in cheering me up. And helping me get the right answers from the dealer.
Dropped my truck off to my dealer on tuesday for the transmission recall..They said the recall was for a c-clip that needed to be installed in the tranny....After removing the tranny they found other problems besides the clip...4500 miles only...Well i'm picking it up today..I'll see if any change is noticed...

Suggest you pull your external transmission filter to see if or how much metal contamination you have. Guess if there are big chucks of metal, taking you truck might be risky. Also, lots of folks have been reporting harsh or delayed shifting so if you have not had this problem, you may not have the spin walking out yet.
Here's a picture of the filter that Ford installs with the 04B24 recall if damage is found (or if you're dumb like me and ask for it regardless). CLICK HERE
I do not understand why people continue to complain in regards to this issue. Ford and the dealerships are being very proactive about this transmission issue with notifications, loaners, additional filter systems etc...
Would you rather not know and have it blow in the mountains somewhere on a Sunday morning while pulling a trailer of any kind?
Ford has spent a tremendous amount of $$$ on this issue because some guy plugged in the wrong #'s on a CNC machine and the pinning shaft was mfg'ed under spec. creating this problem. As I stated in an earlier post...this is not a design issue...it is a stupid "human" error issue at the point of manufacturing.
I wonder if those being notified by the dealer are thanking them for the "heads up" or raising cane at them and kicking cans in the parking lot?
