I've got about 31K miles on mine with no problems, mostly commuter but 20% towing. I have had no problems with tranny. . . . Trying to figure out if I want dealer to crack the tranny case or not since I've had no probs. Any hints guys?
Chris, the tech who did mine said that of the trannys he has seen, those with bad planetary gears had damage had by 10k miles or so. On the other hand, he also said that of the ones he did the recall on, only 4 had damage. That's a small sample, IMO, so take with a grain of salt.
I was none too thrilled about having my tranny opened up, either. I envisioned the work being by some overworked, underpaid mechanic with a manager breathing down his neck to hurry up and get the next vehicle up on the rack. But after I talked to the tech who actually did the work, my gut feeling was that I should have it done. A big deciding factor for me was the unknown: since my truck only had 5K miles, I might never know if mine had bad planetary pinion shafts until and unless it failed, which might not happen under warranty. So I submitted to the recall about 800 miles ago. So far, so good.
Note that your truck is in a different situation. You've already gone 30k, and there's only 6k left on your warranty (unless you have ESP). Talk to the tech who will work on yours, then decide. Take your time. You have until Sept 30 of this year, regardless of warranty.
Results of my Tranny Repair( or my Tranny experience)
I took my 04 250 in today. The repair was completed in about 8 hours. The mechanic probably did it in 5. The tech told me that thier are two types of repair- minor and major. The minor is just the gears and incidental parts. The major repair involves the gears, cooler, silenoid and incidentals. My truck had only 5000 miles and the gears had "started to go" according to the tech. Because I mentioned the one time hard shift he did the major.
Please not that he said" Ford's silenoids are notorious for causing problems so he replaced it. This is what the poster above mentioned as well.
I told him not to mess with the flash if not neccessary. Truck ran good atleast for the fifteen miles home from the dealer. I could not tell a difference.
Good experience so far. The tech seemed knowledgeable and that put me at ease.
I got my back yesterday and it took them 4 day to repair it. they said that the pin had walk out and hit the drum above it and had to order a new one. well see how it go's. the only bad part was driveing the mini van loader.
Oddly, the 04B24 recall never showed up on mine on the "my ford" site, even though OASIS flagged my vin# and I also got a letter (a month after I had the work done). I asked the service manager about this and he said it's because it's not a safety recall.
botinker, which recall did you have done on yours? The snap ring or the planetary pins? Those symptoms sound more like they didn't do it right or didn't put the right parts in during the recall.
I am not an expert, but I highly doubt it has anything to do with needing a reflash. The delay is what both our '04 and '05 were doing when the snap ring let go on the '04 and the planetary pins wlaked out on the the '05.
Now they want me to bring the '05 in for the snap ring. I really am hesitant to let them ever touch my transmissions again.
I finally got my truck back after 3 trips to the dealer caused by the Recall work...
They Initially did the 04B24 Recall and installed both kits because of some damage they noticed, and this included dropping the Transmission and replacing the Planetary Gear and several other parts including the Trans. Cooler...They also flushed the whole Transmission and replaced the seals and gaskets and etc...
After driving it and noticing the Hesitation and jerking, I took it back...
They kept it a week and said they found a small sliver of metal that was jamming the Solenoid... They flushed it again and replaced the Solenoid...
I picked it up and noticed it was shifting a little slow... I opened the hood and checked the Transmission fluid level... The Dipstick was DRY!
This time I had a serious Telephone discussion with the Service Manager and brought it back to them for a 3rd time... This time 2 Techs and the service manager met me as I came in... They checked the fluid level and the dipstick was dry... They said that the Factory had told them to put 8 Quarts in after the last flush and solenoid replacement...(it holds 18 quarts) They said maybe an air pocket or the torq converter had lost some fluid and caused this... Anyway, They had to add 2 1/2 Quarts to get it up to the full level...
I have driven it hard for about 300 miles now and it is shifting like new... I hope they have finally fixed it!
I have 500 miles on my new F250 PSD. Went to the dealer last week to make an appointment to get the bed and cab aligned and he told me that I fell under the snap ring recall. It goes in tomorrow morning for the snap ring. Not too thrilled about them having to open up the tranny because she runs perfect right now, but after the nightmares I had with my 2004 F150, I'm glad they're on top of things. What makes me feel better is that my dealer is the largest Ford truck dealer in the area. Hopefully their techs have alot of experience fixing this problem.
Hasn't come in the mail yet. Motorhaven told me Wednesday...maybe it will show up today. That EGR fell off and I did notice a 3 lb loss in boost, but nothing much to speak of in performance catagory.
