I don't know why there was a metal shaving in the pan. I don't know where it would have come from. Maybe try the tranny section and see what they say.
Since you mentioned the fluid was in good shape that would make me think the bands/clutches are fine as they weren't burning the fluid. If you do try it with another converter Lemme know what you find out, later

i am just going to take the convertor from the tbirds tranny since it looks pretty new. it is shiny dark green. fords convertors are grey.the metal shaving was halfway in a hole that connects to the drum area and halfway into the valve body area. someone said it could be a front pump bushing. but i don't know it is close to 7 inches long or past that.it is very jagged too.
It's not everyday that somebody leaves a message on your phone saying that they found a 95 mustang 5 spd. manual with a boatload of cool stuff extra at there dealership and that they would pay for half. tomorrow i am getting a mustang project that runs great and in excellent condition. it has chrome mag rims dual exhaust kenwood motorized face stereo a spoiler and a 5 spd. v6. what a better time to get this. anyway since it has a manual tranny when that motor gets worn out i can put my 8 in it and don't have to worry about driveline crap. on stalls and no extra work other than new motor mounts and a bigger radiator. anyway i might not. i do want my tbird running again and i am about to be finished with my other aod tranny. so it won't be too long. just a matter of me getting the time and the help to drop the motor in. the stang also has an alarm and power locks. but it would be cool to put my motor in it but they would ont like that idea.
Sounds like you've had some luck. Just a thought, everyone and their grandmother has a mustang, how cool would it be to leave someone scratching their head in your t-bird. Well your right, if you do get the 5-speed you won't be concerned with stall converter speeds, but you will be concerned with burnt up clutches.
Just messing with you, so are you going half with a friend, on the mustang? Maybe you could use spare parts and make it a drag only car? later

ok i got the car it is all very nice except for one semi major thing. they must have put something in the oil because had way home it start haveing a knock in the lower end. so i believe it has a s;umg bearing. i am hoping i can just lift the motor, drop the pan and fix it in one day or something. because i can't let anybody know about this or i am in trouble i was not ******* it or nothing but i know it has great potential and i actually like this v6. somebody put aftermarket headers an true duals with chrome pipes out the back.
it is piston slap my mech. said. it is ok it is only one piston i will be fixing it soon. and when and if it blows before i fix it in the upcoming week then i will have an 8 in it's place.
Well fella when you get a pic of the mustang, e-mail it to me or something, you almost have enough cars to start your own car lot. Pretty soon your gonna be hanging out on the www.corral.net/forums/ website all the time and forget about your ford truck roots
. Hope the car is an easy fix, *cough* v8, later

you know i am just gonna put the 8 in the tbird.it deserves it and i will get the v6 fixed. ported heads and a stroker crank to make it a 4.2 and some other stuff to make it a baby sleeper. i wonder if they make a cam for it
