update i put an old truck aod next to my c5 and they are about the same length and it looks like the splines are the same. the mounts are in the same spot to. so this looks like any other tranny install. but i did notice that the tailshaft on the c5 moves around a bit. is this a bad bearing. the old aod did it to but not as bad. the tailshaft is still centered so i don't think i have to worry when my driveshaft slips in it won't let it wobble around but i will get it checked out by a guy when i am able to see him. did c4 trannys come in 78 f100's. i belive i may have one and didn't know it. the guy i got the truck from said it was a universal tranny but i looked at the pan and it looked like the c5 pan so i am thinking i got a c4. i will check it closer later today. i have to look for a job soon or none of my stuff is going to get done.
ok i got a b&m starshifter that i owned before back and i think it might work if i don't have to change the cable. does anybody know if i have to. i have all the mounts undone and found out that my tranny mount is bad as well as the driver side motor mount. i may just make my own solid mounts. that would be cool when i rev it up the whole car will shake and i won't have to change them or pay 225 dollars for them again. i got the exhaust off. while i have it off i am going to gut the 3 cats since i cannot put duals since the gas tank won't allow it
i did not get under there today i forgot. but when i do i will. when i bought the truck it had no motor. he said he drove it there and then took it out and sold it seperate. i belive the tranny is working
it has new seals. is there such a thing as a universal tranny.

no tranny is univerial they are all different, excapt of the same kind like 2, c4's. but not like a c4'c5. another thing does the tranny in the truck have fluid in it now? if not how long has it set dry? another thing is when was the last it was run? ometimes trannys that have sat dry dont work properly because the seals could have dried up. sometimes if you are lucky after about 2 weeks the seals will soften up and work agian. I would add 1 quart of lucis just to help out. always check ur band when installing a tranny. you said something about the tailshaft moveing around... i dont think tat that sound to healthy.it could be ok depending on how much it moves. always replace the filter and loook everything over, you pobibly know all of this but sometimes the small things are missed and could cause you to fork out alot of extra cash. OH ad i fired up my 351, 393 stroker up yeserday and well i can onestly say that i think i am going to let it idle for quite a while to break it in
Yeah what adilts2002 said. That star shifter if you are planning on using it behind the c4/c5 it should work. Well sounds like things are finally coming together, and that job might help things along, as well.
Well, your getting closer to running that thing everyday, should be alot of fun. Do you know what gears are in that cars rear axle? good luck again.

Which direction (more importantly which crank) did you use to get the 393? Did it require a lot of work to balance it? later

the tranny has good looking fluid in it. i pulled the truck and it was pumping out. but i am sure it still has fluid. i might pull it out today to check it out. my c5 has been sitting there for something like a year. not sure if i left any fluid in it but i don't know.
You can check the rear axle by blocking the front tires raise the rear axle put the car in neautral, mark the driveshaft to center section put a line across both. make a mark on the passenger side tire and a reference point on the fender. Turn the driveshaft and count how many revolutions it takes to turn the driveshaft to get the tire around one full turn. This isn't the most accurate way but if the driveshaft truns anything more than 3 ideally 3 and a half turns then you know its a 3.55 with a fair amount of certainty. I checked both my trucks this way and it worked as well as another blazer, I knew what the rear gearing was just checked to see if this method worked. Just make sure the front tires are blocked and its on a level area, it would be ideal to use a car stand under each axle tube. later
the tranny in the 78 truck has 14 pan bolts and 4 front pump bolts. the pan is rectangle. short from front to back and long from left to right. it looks nothing like my c5. one tranny line is on the right side towards the front and the other line is on the back side pretty much under the tailshaft. is this a c4 i have no idea
