I remember GTE back in the 80s. Then Frontier ?? Then Ziply?
Lots of consolidations in phone systems have happened.
My grandpa retired from PNW Bell (AT&T) in early 80s which then became-> US West -> Qwest-> Century ?
Back when there was long distance phone calls and sometimes to the house just a few blocks up the road.
In my experience with going to fiber internet at 2 different houses is they like to pull your landline off of copper and put you on the fiber. Old house they included a battery backup for equipment for emergency calls but at this house they didn't offer a battery backup for equipment or a way to use landline if power goes out.
At my last house I made them keep my landline on copper and internet on fiber because it was a requirement back then with my ADT alarm to be on copper.
If the power goes out you should be able to read around 74V at your phone line coming into the house if you still have a copper line servicing the house. They are trying to remove all of the old copper phone lines withing a few years, it will be forced.
Was that starting with General Telephone, or were they bought out by then?
Yep, I started with GTE in 1991.

Don't forget Verizon! In my career, I hired on with GTE, then Verizon, Frontier and finely Ziply. GTE was a great company to work for, if you did an outstanding job above and beyond as they say you would get a letter from the president of the company. Then there was Verizon we all became numbers, that may have also been the beginning of everyone gets a trophy, there are no losers. If you did an outstanding job the letter was sent to the boss to recognize the whole group for doing a good job. Frontier started out good but the upper management made some real poor decisions and it went down fast. Ziply was and is a money making venture for the big boys, they were not hiding behind anything when they bought the company. They are a broadband company not a phone company. I'm sure glad I'm out of it, it was a great career.
Starting the day at 60° on its way to 80 plus, they say this is the last 80° day for the foreseeable future.
Headed out to pickup two ton of grass hay this morning.
So, to follow on the hay trip. We got our two ton got it home and in the barn. But there was a problem, when we got there and got the hay loaded I started to tie it down and realized we lost one of the ramps, heavy metal about 4' long, that was a bummer. We retraced our path but never found it. I'm sure glad it didn't cause an accident, at least that I know of.

It's a shame that we have no choice in this matter. Now the only way to get a "land-line" is through wifi. You wanna know how often my internet goes out?
Evening Tim, Wayne, Ken, Nikolas and Willie. We still have copper running along the back roads here in NY. They also ran Fiber so who knows what they have in mind for the immediate future. Very few service guys here as well. we are with Frontier. Takes a couple of days to get someone to help if needed. The last problem we had was with internet. When the guy finally was able to get to our job he checked down at the switch and saw that the card for our house had it light on saying we were getting data but that was it, the light was on, and no one was home! He switched cards and there's your dinner. He ended up swinging up here to verify and I was glad he did since he grew up just down the hollow from us and use to ride the bus with our kids. Good catch-up time.
Tim, that is quite a bit of hay you moved multiple times to get it where you wanted it. Now just one more handling perhaps when you feed it out!
Good morning WA and Hay Haulers from far and wide...Happy Saturday #4...we're officially on the downhill slide to the weekend...hang on for the ride!!!
Gonna be a splendiferous day here...hope you're getting one as well!!!
ThongTastic Thursday afternoon Washington, Tim, Nicolas, 350 Ken, Steve, Ken and all the crew. It has been a bright sunny day like yesterday but this one I was able to stay home! LOL
Wifey informed me yesterday morning we were doing hay and putting it and feed/grain in the barn. On the way home we stopped for lunch about 1100 and I got called into work! Note, I am retired again and haven't worked for almost 2 months! After the barn work was done, I went in to fix a critical failure, look at another piece of equipment and fix a safety issue! About 3 hours' worth.
Home and shower and to Moms and to Bible Study! Yesterday someone gave Mom about 40# of peaches that needed processed today!
Evening Tim. Another nice one here, always something to do and much I wish I could get to! We have been trying to take time to sit on the porch towards evening as these kinds of days will be gone before you know it but it doesn't happen very often!
My mom was superstitious, in 1969 we were on a road trip to Kansas it was 12:05 AM Friday the 13th she was driving and hit a deer. It was in her mind after that.
I've been able to spend a little time in the shop, been working a little on the Bronco project getting close to setting the body on it. The garden is coming down, I think Maria harvested the last of the tomatoes yesterday. We still have lots of apples to harvest and a few Asian Pears left on the tree.
I'm in that mode also with buttoning up the outside projects and stuff but we don't have many apples or Japanese pears left due to the hungry deer and elk.
Last night when I couldn't sleep I ended up on the copart website and decided to throw a $300 bid at a car just for the heck of it. So this morning I got an email that I won the auction for a 2003 vw jetta tdi for $275! Woohoo! Like I need another project but a tdi into my $500 Ranger project is coming along nicely. Now I need to decide if I should switch the auto trans to manual or not before I buy the trans specific adapter kit.
Ok poll time... What transmission do you think the ranger should have with the tdi swap?
A) Automatic
B) Manual
