CP4 Implosion!!! CRAP! CRAP! CRAP!
Before I go on my rant about the Bosch CP4, I will state a few facts:
- I take care of my equipment. All service work is handled on time. I don't abuse my truck at all.
- I add the Ford PM-22A treatment to most tanks of fuel (probably 80% of the time) since I bought this truck new back in 2016.
- I have NEVER run out of fuel in this truck. The fuel system has NEVER been dry.
BEGIN RANT
Ford, GM, and Dodge/RAM have all used Bosch high pressure fuel pumps for years. In 2010 Bosch released the CP4 version of the pump. Ford specifically designed the 2011 6.7 Powerstroke around the CP4. GM immediately used it in their 2011 Duramax (LML?). Cummings (Ram/Dodge) used the CP3 until 2019 when the 6.7L Cummings was released and they switched to the CP4. Well each vendor has had failures - significant quantities of failures. GM stopped using the CP4 in 2016. They don't use Bosch pumps at all anymore on Duramax. Cummings only used the CP4 for 2019 and 2020, then immediately went back to the CP3 while issuing a recall to replace existing CP4's in the field with CP3s. What has Ford done? Nothing. They continue to ship new trucks with this POS fuel pump.
If you do your research, you can find all kinds of information and various facts / figures. But based what I found in Europe Bosch sees about 1% failure. In the USA, Bosch sees about 7% failure. (I suspect this data is educated guesses as I doubt Bosch is going to release that data...). This fuel pump is a disaster in the US market. I am just astounded that Ford continues to use this pump.
Here is a very good article on the CP4 from an independent source:

So my story is more interesting... This is my second experience with the CP4. I had a 2011 F-250 with the 6.7 Powerstroke. In 2014, my CP4 imploded as well. My 2011 truck only had about 52,000 miles on it. I was actually on vacation up on Colorado where it died and left me stranded. As with my 2017, I properly operated and maintained that truck (always used PM-22-A, never ran it dry, all service work completed at the specified intervals). So now Ford has let me down twice for the exact same problem. I thought the first CP4 failure was a fluke. Now that it has happened twice, I am just pissed.
Back in October of last year, I renewed the extended warranty on my 2017. I am glad I did so but apparently Ford is slow to approve the warranty action for this fuel system replacement. The dealer told me that there has been no evidence of rust anywhere in my high pressure fuel system. My fuel is clean - no evidence of gas or DEF in the tank. (which make sense - I take care of my equipment). So now I am stuck in limbo waiting on Ford to decide if they are going to SCREW one of their loyal customers. Yes, I am Ford guy. I wear Ford hats and Ford shirts. I have always been a blue oval fanboy! I have owned countless Fords since I bought my first one at age 16. So in nearly 40 years of driving, I have owned many of them. At this point, I am disgusted with Ford for two reasons:
- Why keep making a product with a highly suspect component!!!
- Why drag out the warranty approval and stall and threaten not to do it!!!
I am seriously considering selling my F-350 (which I have loved) once it is repaired and stepping away from Ford. Man it hurts to say that.... I hate GM products and I have never been fond of Dodge/Ram but I am seriously considering a Ram truck now. No wonder Ford stock stays in the crapper!
FORD GET YOUR CRAP TOGETHER!!!
END RANT
I was just pricing out a ram last week. Between the little cab, and to get the aisin trans, the prices are through the roof.

A 2024 gmc sierra 3500 dmax, isn't nowhere near the same truck as a 2019, or a 2011! In fact it is more similar or closer to a 23 ford then a gm of earlier years.
If you drive both, you will like the gm better then ram as cabin feels closer to ford. Atleast to me, but have to order a GM as they are selling like crazy! Ram looks nice but just to dated. I had a 2012 model, I sold for 26k. I felt I was rebuying it for 86k. 😆. Couldn't warm up to it.
Also, had a 2011 duramax. Best truck I have ever had as far a maintenance, 235k all I did was a water pump, and a $800 TCM. They make solid trucks!

But, since my warranty is aftermarket, we can get the parts from an aftermarket source, and they have the kits in stock, I believe they piece them together to get complete kits, not like Ford supplies them.
One good thing on a 2017 is that the kits are cheaper, if you decide not to wait and pay out of pocket.

management changes but the smaller brakes, smaller axles, smaller springs, smaller engine, smaller weaker everything, lower tow ratings, lower power never changes.
GM promotes their accountants to their vehicle design teams. Anyone wanna guess why?
Question for you, why did my 2011 have a 11.5" diff, but a 2022 f250 is sterling 10.50?
Don't knock a product when you know nothing about it! All 3 will tow and be equal. Op wanted a new truck without a CP4, so that would be anything but FORD! Responding to him!
