absolutely correct, same goes for the overhead oilers ( jiffy kits) they pulled oil from a main gallery externally and delivered to the rocker shaft via special hollow valve cover bolt. Bandaid and in reality it starved the bottom end for oil

Only one, Jim; the rear tube is the feed tube, and the forward tube is the return tube.

No the oil is fed into the rockers from a port in the head that connected with ports in the feet of the rocker assembley. near the bolt holes for it

I'm not clear on exactly what angle you are asking from, but for starters, refresh what your budget allows.

Just build it per specs, oversize or undersize where necessary. They are tough little engines when maintained and not abused. I've had a couple of them as drivers. Make sure it has hardened valves and seats.

A good starting place would be the rebuild kit pointed out earlier and subtracting what you can't afford or have the ability to do. Of course, getting a machine shop involved in machining work is always a good idea. You probably shouldn't "mill the head to boost compression", but you should have a machine shop mill it to clean and flatten the mating surfaces. Hardened seats are essentially a given/default when rebuilding the valve train.

i think i will make a custom tube intake for it to use a 4barrel for more power and fuel distribution and a custom header as well as add side extensions to the oil pan

any suggestions for an oil port to tie into to add more oil to the rockers? Safe options?

Just a caution, you shouldn't be ordering bearings, rings, pistons etc blindly by part number. You will have to have disassembled the motor and already precisely measured (and machined) the crank and bore and whatnot to a standard over/undersized set. And if you are reducing the costs that much, you are drastically reducing what you are refreshing.

Unless you have a access machine/fabrication shop yourself and have drastically expanded your budget, I would recommend that you shy away from, erm, uh, "modifications and upgrades". These engines are good engines with some pretty decent engineering and a stock build will be a safe bet.

Your truck and your budget, which you say is limited, but I would add only what was necessary.

As someone said earlier with modern detergent oil, starving at the top end is no longer a problem.

I know you have a 6 cylinder. Yblocks had this problem years ago if oil wasn't changed when needed. Some guys added external oilers to the heads. My 54 never had them. I had the engine rebuilt in 1979 and have never had that problem.

ok i am waiting to buy the parts until i tear down the motor and find out what needs to be done to it. and i trust modern oil, i was just asking if that could help the motor at all.
