Everyone is correct, the Y block and 223 are different. The only other engine using the 215/223 bell housing bolt pattern is the 262. there are several 223 type bell housings, one for 3 speed trans, one for 4 speed trans and with and without mounting provision for hydraulic clutch.

So, if you were to replace the 223 with a Y block you would need the Y block to 4 spd bell. The 223 bell hole pattern is smaller as is the alignment bore.

what about it?
transmission doesn't care. That is if we are talking about a transmission that is from this time frame. A 56 f100 y block truck with either a 3 speed or a 4 speed will bolt right up to a 56 223 bell housing.

when I read that it just doesn't make sense

a transmission behind a 223 will bolt up to a y block bell housing no problem

A transmission behind a y block will bolt up to a 223 bell housing

so long as we are talking truck applications meaning truck trans mated to a truck bell housing

car trans and truck bells do not interchange nor do car bells work with truck transmission
