Here he is talking about it. There's another thread where someone put in the actual part number of - not the factory Ford seal but an aftermarket seal. That's what I bought and it is very cool.
And some thread sealant on the flywheel bolts is important as mentioned, too.
jjriley,
I didn't go back over the 120+ posts in this thread or scan possible other threads for a clue...so I'll just ask here: Do you suspect this engine was rebuilt in the past? The reason I ask is because I noticed the installed DORMAN soft plug... I kinda doubt FoMoCo would have used a DORMAN brand soft plug....but IDK either.

Good idea on the seal. Thanks for the reminder. I had read over that, but it was right after I started looking into getting this fixed a few months back and forgot about it. I'll hunt it down and use one.

I'm really not sure. That plug is definitely not flush on the bottom and was replaced at some point. I'm going to get some brass ones to replace those. I'll know more once I get the pan off and have a look inside. The engine is really clean inside on the top end so it is possible. I'm not expecting any surprises on the bottom end.
FelPro BS 40645 is the part number from this thread. https://fordsix.com/viewtopic.php?t=65124 They mention in the thread that the modular ones are different. I have the one that came in my kit. I'll have the guys at the parts store order one and compare with mine and see.
A quick question for you all. Can the head bolts be reused?

Because you are not upping the compression or installing any power-adders, you are only installing new gaskets, seals, plugs, paint, etc. I would re-use them and not think twice about it. JMHO...

Yes, that's the thread and that's the number I used I am fairly certain. Cool. I'd been trying to find that info again. Thanks!
Lookin good. Engine compartment is cleaner than normal in there. Did you power wash before removing?
Yes, reusing head bolts is A-ok, unless they have some rust pitting below the cap.
I noticed the Dorman plug also. Something was up there. Maybe it was replaced when a clutch was replaced? Never know sometimes.
Cool, reusing the bolts it is. I also found the source of my exhaust leak. You couldn’t smell it, but I knew I had one because you could see the exhaust gas if you goosed the throttle while looking under the hood. I just couldn’t tell where it was coming from. I should get to some disassembly this week The manifold will get replaced at some point.
As far as the engine bay cleanliness, I had degreased it not to long before pulling the motor as there was oil and power steering fluid all over. It is still plenty messy and needs a cleaning though.
I got the head apart last night and boy, it isn’t as pretty as the bottom end. The good news is the valve seats and valves aren’t pitted, there is just a bunch of buildup that needs cleaned. The valve seals were shot and the new ones will be here tomorrow.
Looks real good. Since you're making it so pretty you'll probably get a new manifold but FWIW in the meantime a quick brazing would seal that manifold or you could even weld it, 7018 works well on cast steel.

Thank you.
Eventually yes I'll get one, however the budget on this was as close to $200 as I can keep it so the manifold will probably have to wait. The only way I knew it was leaking was from when I was messing with the carb and saw a little exhaust. I never smelled it. My neighbor, who is a welder by trade, said it was a 50/50 shot on if it would work because of the rust on it. I'm going to see if he will give it a shot for me and if it doesn't work, then I'll have to pony up the dough.
It always seemed to me that the late 50's, 60's and up to mid 70's, Ford had **** poor factory valve stem seals.
50-75 thou miles and they were dried up, broken, hard as a rock from heat. I don't know how many of them over the years back then that I dried up the oil consumption/puffing after putting new seals on.
