Brake light/signal light problems.
Looks like it has after market taillight lens. I'd be looking around at the rear lights at wiring for a problem first. They may have both left and right tied together back there, causing both to flash.
Do the fronts both also flash together?
As BarnieTrk said someone put them blue dots in there. The taillights are factory.
The fronts don't light at all. The rear lights don't flash they just light up solid if you signal right or left. I was able to verify that the wiring from the plug on the firewall is not shorting and the lights are not tied together on that end. I appreciate the assistance.
I have half of the truck buffed out and it will definitely work for now. You can see the contrast on the hood.
I also took off the steering wheel and looked at the turn signal switch. The switch is new. I traced out the wiring and found the wire for the brake light circuit that goes from the ignition switch to the fuse panel shorting out. I will be putting a new fuse panel in as this one has seen better days. I put new wire for the run and it all works like it should. I'm very happy right now.
Thanks guys. I worked on the gauges some more this weekend and was able to get the turn signal indicators working properly. The truck also had a very high idle. I replaced the dry rotted hose for the PCV valve and found that the vacuum line for the advance on the distributor was not connected to the bottom of the carb, per the carter manual. It was going to a another vacuum port and the hose was rotted. I replaced the hose and put it to the right spot and now it idles very nice and doesn't rev high when changing gears. I did have to turn up the idle screw just a hair. The fuel gauge is the only one not working now, so it'll be the next interior item to get looked at. There is also an oil leak coming from the rear of the motor (possible rear main) that I have to identify. I was able to drive it to a small local car show this past weekend and even though she is rough cosmetically, it got tons of interest. It was nice to be able to give dad credit for all of the work he put into this.
So I was looking into the fuel gauge not working and think I found the issue. The gauge does work confirmed by grounding the wire that goes to the sending unit. There is no ground lug on the unit, but I found units that ground using the tank flange. The tank is a custom piece built for the truck and I verified with a meter that it is grounded. The only other thing I can think of is the orientation of the sending unit. Dad had them mount it from the bottom of the tank. Very easy to access and work on, however the resistor in the sending unit probably is not configured for this orientation. When I remove the bed, I will be putting an access for the sending unit on the top and sealing up the hole on the bottom. On another note, I got the last two lights (license plate bulbs) working last night. Next I will be addressing the brake line and oil leaks that I have found.
My '65 uses a ground wire off of the sending unit and it's attached to the rear cab wall just above the sending unit with a #2 screw. So I think you'll be good grounding it anywhere so long as it's path can easily find it's way back to the battery/alternator ground.
Mine used to have that at one time. Even though the tank isn't in the cab anymore, I saw the wire there yesterday. I seem to remember hearing that dad had a tank built, but I've been looking at gas tanks from 65-70 mustangs and they look almost identical to the setup on my truck. They don't have a ground wire either. I am rethinking some things. I will try putting a ground wire on one of the lugs. If that doesn't work I will drain the tank and pull the sending unit and test it. As a last result I will probably get a mustang sending unit since I know it will have the correct resistor orientation.
It is under the bed where the spare used to go. There is a, for lack of a better word, "butchered" hole in the bedfloor to fill it. It's a mod that would have happened if dad wouldn't have already done it. Post #24 on this thread has pics of it.
