jjRILEY,
Why do you want the tank under the bed anyway?

When I first bought my '65, it was rigged for a different tank set up. The previous owner ran it in the desert and had it outfitted with a 60-gallon tank set up in the box. I didn't care for it and took it out, then located and installed a cab-mounted, behind the seat OEM style tank.

I do custom audio setups and need the behind the seat space for a system I'm doing to show case my side business. You won't see it just looking in since the bench seat is staying and I'm not cutting anything drastic to make it happen like this one I worked on a few months ago.

WOW - that looks like a serious sound system! I'd bet it would kill a battery in no time and takes a heavy power lead to feed that unit!

Very serious. The blue boxes on the back wall are batteries and the mains for the power have been upgraded to 0 gauge. My 65 will be nothing near this stout.

The wife has been working nights and I don't sleep well alone so I have been in the garage a lot lately. I have narrowed the fuel gauge issue down to the sending unit. I was able to confirm that the fuel tank is from a 65-68 mustang so I can get a new sending unit and then cross that off the list. I have gotten the wipers working correctly not that I plan on using them, but I want everything to work. The horn was sounding like a dying goose, so a new horn fixed that issue. I did an oil change and found written on the filter 12/16/16 so it had been a while. I bought a Mr. Gasket dipstick, since finding the factory one has proven almost next to impossible, and cut it down to size and made my marks on it after the oil change so I now know for sure if the oil level is good. I also found that there was no neoprene washer on the oil drain plug and it was a source of a leak. That has also been fixed. I got the CD player that dad had laying in the floor hooked up and was going to connect the door mounted speakers temporarily, but there were no holes for the wire and I couldn't bear to drill new ones. I opted to wedge a speaker in the dash above the radio to just have something for now. The next thing will be the leaking brake line and brake system flush. I should be able to tackle that this weekend. I am getting close to starting the body work.

On my 65 I ran speaker wires through the holes for the upper door hinges and stuffed them through some 5/16 fuel line to protect against pinching. I also removed the uncut lower door panels and made some wooden ones to mount the speakers. 6x9 sony xplode for the rear channel and a pair of old alpine 5.25" on the front.

Cool idea with fuel line and the panel replacements look good.

My plan is to make kick panels out of fiberglass when I do the interior since I'm looking to get correct staging. The speakers have to be as far forward as possible to do that. I will also be making door panels to cover where the speaker holes are cut now. The single dash speaker will work for now since the truck isn't daily driven.

Last Friday was a milestone for me. Up until that point the truck was only driven small distances due to not yet being road legal (don't try this at home kids). Friday I finally got it insured and road legal. I filled up the tank Friday night and then it rained and a rained and rained all weekend. With no weatherstrip she is still a fair weather driver only. Now since it will be on the road more, I picked up some nice stainless bolts for the bed as there were only 2 oversized rusted bolts holding it on. I also had to finish bolting the front bumper on and I added a third lap belt so I can take two passengers instead of one. It's getting there and will get driven for a while before I rip the body down for refinishing.

Yeah I really enjoy the tinkering and am dying to get the body work going, but the driving it is where it's at and was the reason dad was building it in the first place.

Another small victory was accomplished last night. I have the original ignition key, but no door key to speak of. O'reilly had a "direct fit" lock cylinder set that required about an hour with a couple of files to get to work. The doors will now keep honest people honest. Not sure what's next.

The bottom one is the new one and it required the use of the original linkage arm.

Sharpie marks that required removal.

Like a glove!!

I got ahold of a correct 65 front bumper yesterday to replace the 77ish one and removed the four layers of paint tonight. I have to hit it with 80 grit and then I'll paint it silver for now. When the truck gets the repaint I'll decide what color for the bumpers. The guy only wanted $25 for the front and rear. If anybody is near Tulsa and wants this rear bumper, it's yours for the asking since I'll never use it.

I finished sanding the bumper and got it painted. The passenger side mount is bent in a little so the are only 3 bolts holding it on for now. I like this much better than the other.

JJRiley, I agree.....it looks much better.
What have you decided on going with for a rear bumper?
