Pardon my ignorance Jim, I don't even know what a puddle light is. My take was he wanted to light his running boards when the lights were on. my method surly would have done that. I will be quiet now. (you didn't have to read this thread at all).
I'm about to start a running board light project, and was curious if you guys know if any plug or wire that is easily accessible to tap into to have them come on when the doors are opened, or when the unlock on the remote is pressed, just like all of the other exterior lights.
Right here, real simple. I'm tired of threads not being read entirely then end up going the wrong way with no help to the op. Thought maybe moderators would deal with this. Sorry I blewup.
It's always been my understanding puddle lights are in the bottom of the mirrors. I have never heard the courtesy lights on running boards called puddle lights. Still can't find any reference to puddle lights in the thread other than your recent post. Maybe I'm missing something.

Alright folks, I took a stab at the install and after much time thinking about it I finally started, hesitated, scratched my head, and finished. I used a volt meter to test which probe worked on the top marker light, and on my truck it was the middle prong, so I tapped that wire. I had a lot of debate about where to run the wires, but followed where other wires were ran. The final result was worth the 6 hours of time I took to do from start to finish (with a lot of hesitation in there). I took a video, but will have to figure out how to upload video or a link to it after uploading to YouTube or somewhere.

To clear this up, I ran lights above the running boards and they do indeed illuminate the running boards and the ground when the rear lights illuminate (when I unlock the truck or open the doors as well I believe).
Is there a chance that the wires on the frame are for the power running boards and they are just not used for those of us that have fixed running boards?

It seems that is the case, but it's very odd to figure out why some have them and others don't. For instance, 2 XLT's, mine premium, another member a value, and his has the plug and mine doesn't.

On two F250s I've owned, including my current truck, it's the lead for opotional step lights. They fade just like the rest of the lights, just like in op's video. Can't explain why it's hit or miss on the 2017s.
I see that the lights illuminate when you unlock the doors. Which I like. Do they also illuminate when the door is opened (already unlocked)?
yes they do. I'm nervous now that they may be on when the headlights are on too. Not that I really care, but I think that's how it's wired since I tapped into the taillight. My wife was trying to diagnose for me while I'm at work, but I have multiple phone calls going on so I'll just have to test it tonight.

Assuming you did tap into the tail light, yes, they'll be on anytime the headlights or parking lights are on.
