Sorry I can't my 17 is being built today. fairly simple though, you can tap at a tail light front marker or cab clearance light. simplest is likley the tail light. at the back of the socket there should be two wires one hot one ground. use a test light to id. BUT not sure if these are combo lights if so there will be three.
the third is brake/turn. if you truck is a duelly there is a marker in the rear fender. My trucks are all cab and chassis.
Top marker harness, reverse harness, bottom marker harness (from top to bottom)
Here are the harnesses/wires for my halogen rear lights. Which wire could I tap for the running boards to function like the other exterior lights when I lock and unlock the doors?
I will try. keep in mind I don't have this truck. Looks like both the top and bottom plugs you show are the same function. Turn on the marker lights, probe the connector side of the plug, the terminal that lights your test light is the correct wire. for confirmation turn off markers, re-probe, test light should not light.
You can find the marker circuit in the trailer plug the same way. Would be my choice, but not as easy to sort out. Silicone filled scotch lock is the quickest and least likley to give future trouble, short of solder and heat shrink.
What a load of crap that some have it and some don't. Anybody know where else I can tap into? I know one member had said he did his side lights on he running board brackets through the tail light, but wasn't sure which wire...
My lights arrive Friday and I will be going the upfitter route if I can't figure out the remote route (which I prefer)
Tap into the dome light circuit, this is timed and synchronized to dim on and dim off, with key fob and/or opening of door. Your up fitter switch will do you no good in the dark, unless your in the truck, and you might leave them on accidentally while driving. Find a good repair shop if you can't do it yourself, should take less than an hour and pretty simple.
What style lights did you add to the running boards?
They are some cheap LED lights I found on Amazon. They seem to be well made and say they are waterproof. Time will tell. Made in China and I think they came by boat as long as it took to get them. I'll try to find the link if you're interested. I believe they were $8.51 for a package of 10 shipped.

Thanks, a link would help. Was it difficult to wire them in?

It wasn't Amazon, it was E-Bay. I tried to get the link to work. I'l try again when my son gets home. Must be doing something wrong.
I wired the running board and rear marker lights into the tail light circuit. I removed the passenger side tail light assembly and tapped into the wire there so the splice would be up out of the way of the elements. I ran the feed to the lights through the frame. My connections at each light have marine shrink tube over the splice.
The Raptor lights are wired to a key on hot under the hood so they can also be used as daytime running lights.

Reason: link did not work
The OP is looking for advice for puddle light install not marker lights. Read his original post.
I never saw any mention of puddle lights in the ops original post and the thread is titled "running board lights".
I do believe he may be looking for a way to light his running boards when he opens the doors and not necessarily running board marker lights, but there were other posters making comments about tapping into the marker or tail lights circuit so I added what I did along those lines.
